Smoking 306 DW8

Unread post by Paul Kerry »

Just fitted a replacement engine, it ran properly for around 30 seconds and the started blowing large amounts of white smoke.
I have done a compression test with a cold engine, can't let it warm up as the neighbours will complain!
I had readings of 500, 520, 475 and 450 psi, which is in OK if you believe the Haynes book.
I suspect the lump is OK, Injectors are going to be tested in the next day or two.
The question is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks

Hello there from Bretage, France,

we had very similar problems with a DW8 in a Xsara. It was a long running saga and took forever.

Finally resolved it by changing the glowplugs. We ignored that advice many times, thinking it had to be something more serious, but it was that simple.

Be careful taking them out, they can be a pig. Test them on a good battery, if they are slow to glow bright molten red then they are suspect.

Does it also begin to stutter a bit ?

Hope this helps.
