Abs light on - FIXED
Hi guys,
Interesting development, after the shananigins with brakes, I noticed the N/S outer CV and abs ring was badly corroded so I decided to replace both.
Prior to doing so the ABS light came on after 400 miles of driving, no concerns there as i thought it was the ring finally gave up.
Since replacing CV still the same light on and it is the correct CV as I did the other side 3 years ago and it same part no.
I will check the connections are fitted correctly, have a new set of sensors enroute in case they have died.
Any thing else I have missed.
Kenny

Re: Abs light on
Kenny, have you anyone local to you with a Lexia or ELIT? It'll take all the guesswork out of the problem...
First thing is to check the sensors. This can be done with a multimeter. There's a guide on here somewhere.
Does the light initially go out and come on when driving above a certain speed?

Re: Abs light on
The light came on when I was returning home from Glasgow and has not gone off since.
An extra piece of information i removed both front sensors when fitting the lower ball joints and refitted same. I have not touched the rear sensors.
The light did not come immediately after the refit but 4 days later.

But does the ABS light initially go out and only come on when the car is on the move Kenny?

Re: Abs light on
Jim,
The light comes on when ignition is switched on and stays on no flickering or going off and coming back on.
I'm going to check the connectors at or near the steering rack.

OK, that's more than likely a sensor being unhappy Kenny...

Re: Abs light on
I had similar issues with my rear ABS sensor after changing the rear trailing arm bearings. Despite cleaning out the sensor 'hole' it still had a bit of corrosion in it and the sensor was 1-2mm further away from the disc. I removed sensor and cleaned out the housing for the second time to get it to sit flush. I then had to drive car round the block for all the warning lights to turn off. Good news is that while driving around the block the warning lights all went away without the need to hook up to a lexia.
It took about 35 minutes in total and I didnt even need to remove the wheel but simply raised suspension to the max and used a pen torch to identify the right bolt.

Re: Abs light on
Can a break in the plastic casing surrounding the sensor cause a false reading. I did notice when removing same there was a small break in the plastic which sits in the hole in the caliper exposing the metal below ie electric signal jumping between hub and sensor instead of between sensor tip and ABS ring.

Re: Abs light on
When I replaced a faulty front sensor on Gracie with a cheap one off e-bay I noticed the 'head' had 'pins' sticking out of it slightly. Not knowing any better I fitted it, and it worked for a while. However, the ABS failed again later, and it was the same sensor. When I inspected it I found the 'pins' had rusted. I fitted a better quality sensor (the head was smooth, no signs of pins) and the ABS is happy.
If the ABS has detected a fault, and you fix it, the system still needs to be 'satisfied' it is back in order. It does this by adding an extra test; the sensors need to correctly report the road speed. When you pass 20KMH the system will, if it is working properly, put the ABS light out and remove that test from the procedure.

Re: Abs light on - FIXED
Problem sorted, It would appear the ABS cable was rubbing with something, I suspect the wheel rim and cut through. Replaced same and no light.
I have adjusted the routing of the cable hopefully it will not happen again.

Re: Abs light on - FIXED
i have a similar problem with my saxo vts 16v. I turn on the car and the abs light goes out, I overtake 20 km / h and the light comes on.
I tried to change 2 sensors (one in front and one behind), but same defect. I can't get diagnosed with lexia.

Re: Abs light on - FIXED
A fault that occurs only when driving can be caused by dirt on the sensor rings, or a cracked sensor ring. Inspect them thoroughly.
