C5 Tourer Economy mode

Post by NAM »

My C5 III Tourer Exclusive has been going into Warning message overload - Anti-pollution fault, followed by numerous other faults and engine cutting out. After several episodes of having to pull in and re-start (which seemed to do the trick), I visited Citroen main dealer who diagnosed all the error codes (lots of them) and have replaced the fuse box under the bonnet (which apparantly was not talking to the bits it is supposed to). That was two days ago and so far so good. The only issue I have now is the "Economy Mode Active" message which comes on every time I start the car - even after driving for 1/2 hour.

I have had the battery checked and all is good and I will talk to Citroen but wondered if anyone has come across something similar?

I wondered if the battery needs to be charged more than it is (in which case all should be well) but it does seem strange when the battery's green light is on and the alternator is charging correctly.

Connect a meter across the battery with the engine running, it should read around 14.4 volts, if it does its charging OK.

The Economy mode is something that is totally random, I can tell you from my experience ... after driving for 3 hours, it will sometimes go into it 5 minutes after engine shut down ... other time, I can drive for 5 minutes, and it will be on 30 minutes after engine shut down ... so, up till now, nothing reliable about how and when it triggers, except that it prevents complete battery drainage to ensure basic car functions in case of longer engine inactivity ... I've checked my battery with the meter, and it is fine, even during cranking, so go figure ...

Not uncommon and can be low battery voltage...but you say you have discounted that.

A classic solution is BSI reset, especially if someone has been messing with the battery. (main dealer should know that but so many don't and just follow their computer). I had the same problem but as an extra, I removed and cleaned all plugs on the BSI ECU.

If you know how to reset otherwise it is on a recent post on this forum (but don't have the link) maybe some of the guys and gals can post the link?

Remember, it sometimes takes tow or three resets before it works.

Hope it works (but then you'll have to argue with dealership. It seems wrong if they have done work that does not solve the problem that you should have to pay for it.)

Thanks for replies. I talked to Citroen on the phone and was advised to give the car a good run (which we will do this weekend), to charge the battery. If no improvement then I will be going back to see if they can re-set things to how they were (and your comments are very helpful).

I'll up date the forum once I've given the car a good workout!

Economy mode is supposed to kick in a maximum of 30 minutes after you have stopped the engine, depending on how long the engine has been running. I.E. engine running for 10 minutes, economy kicks in after 10 mins. Engine running for 2 hours, economy kicks in after 30 minutes. Had the same problem. Bought and fitted a new battery and economy mode now kicks in note or less when the book says it should. Economy mode was always erratic although the car started fine. Suddenly, no warning, battery just died. New battery cost circa £100. Could have got it cheaper online but couldn't wait.

Is the car still under warranty?

If you want someone independent of citroen to read the codes just pop by mine sometime and I'll give it a whirl with my lexia and at least give you some ammo before heading back to them :)

Well after driving 4 hours to Norfolk and then driving every day up and down the Norfolk coast the Economy mode has disappeared so the battery must have been very low and took a while to charge up. The other good news is that so far the warnings have gone away and I am now back enjoying the drive!

I wouldn't have come up with a fuse box for the error codes but hats off to Citroen in Sale, Manchester (for now at least).
