If you're looking for economy don't do it. My manual 2.2 will return 28-30mpg around town and 42-48mpg on a run. I have had it as high as 60mpg by hyper mileing and driving like a vicar. Knock about 4-6 mpg off for the auto

These have the ZF 4HP20 autobox and these have a finite life and are basically a time-bomb that starts ticking at around 140K or sooner depending on how it's been used... Most have died by 170K.

It's not terminal and can be fixed with a gearbox overhaul. Something to bear in mind and bargain against.

An FSH showing regular gearbox ATF changes with the right stuff helps the box live a little longer.

When was the last 2.0 8V C5 made? Must be at least 10 years old by now.

I'm not so sure. Probably from the auto, yes, but I'm of the opinion that any 2.2 MK1 that's made it to this age without being scrapped probably works perfectly well, if a little thirsty.

Any reason why you wanted a 2.2? I'm guessing the extra power, why not get a 2.0hdi 8valve & get it re-mapped with as stage 1 as per the link http://www.hdi-tuning.co.uk/ecu-remappi ... DI110.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The best of both worlds, that extra performance when required, & if you drive it gently, then mpg should be better than standard. I'm seriously considering getting this done, once i've sorted out some other bits & bobs on my 2litre hdi estate.

I think you'd need to be wary that some 2004 cars could be 2005MY but looking at the engine bay is the easiest bet as it will say HDi16 on them :)
