Xantia radius arm bearing replacement.

Post by MFHBlueberry »

I've had a go at searching this forum but I can't find much info on this task. Could someone direct me to a post if it exists, or maybe give me an idea of how to go about changing them? It seems to be one of the many areas that the Haynes BoL seems to ignore...

Thanks!

Matthew.

In the BoL for the C5 they tell you how to remove the arm and then say that changing the bearing needs several citroen specialist tools so is best entrusted to a citroen garage. My C5 at the moment is in an independent garage waiting for the parts coming to change mine for the mot which it failed. I can't help you sorry.

First you have to get the arm out, which is where the fun starts.... see here for info http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 11&t=44218" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then you have to drive out the centre tube and spacer, the inner bearing races, then the outer races (which can be tough, but is reportedly made easier by running a bead of weld round the bearing which a) shrinks the ring and b) gives you something to drive on.

The old plastic spacer tube is easily destroyed and crumpled up with a large flat blade screw driver and hammer as there is a large void in the casting around the centre of the tube allowing you to puncture it with the screwdriver and hook it from behind - once mangled and crumpled it can be pulled out through one of the inner bearing races.

Once the tube is out you can use a large round drift and a hammer to tap out each inner bearing race from the opposite end as the lip of the bearing is exposed once the tube is removed. No welding required. :) (That's how I did mine anyway - as we didn't have access to a welder)

One little tip - don't drop anything inside the arm during reassembly of the new bearings and spacer tube - the arm is hollow and you don't want anything rattling inside it when you go over bumps... :oops:

Thanks for the replies! Food for thought. I might buy myself a couple of bearing kits and let them mature on the shelf for a little while as I have neither the T55 bit nor a 24mm ring spanner at the moment...

I'll certainly have a good stare at the area under the car at the weekend at least.

Does anyone know if there are any exploded diagrams of the xantia arm and strut assembly online anywhere?

Thanks!

Matthew.
