I'm tired and can't figure this out

Post by c.morewood »

I spent most of the day under the rear of the Xantia.. My plan was to replace the 2 rear brake pipes. but as usual I discovered that I'm going to have to replace the long 4.5mm pipe as well 'cause all the unions are rusted in solid.. so it'll be a cut, heat and remove process as with the suspension.
So i decided I'd do a little maintenance, I replaced the 3 rear spheres.. 1st time for the anti sink for me.. that went really well and all are not leaking I then decided on removing the brake calipers to get rid of the corrosion and replace the grease between the mount and caliper with baking paper. That went well also .. the rear wheels, without the brake pads would spin for minutes at a time and are fairly free now that the pads are just touching the disc.
I also unbolted the rear height adjuster and dog leg to try to free up the vertical part of the adjuster which may have been partly responsible for the dog leg popping off.. So having completed that I put everything together again... BUT..
the front will not go to the normal setting from high and the back will not go to high at all.
I spend the best part of 2 hours jacking her up adjusting letting her down Citaerobics repeating.. so that I can't think clearly anymore. Please can someone give me a clue where to start tomorrow morning?

Thanks,
Chris

the only way to adjust/set up the ride height is with the car on its wheels, level and with enough clearance when the car is fully down for you to lay/stand without getting squished/dead'id

It is ESSENTIAL also that the height corrector sits in the correct position in relation to the two prongs that stick out from the virtical height lever that the dog bone is attached to!! Very important.m if its out of place the height will never be right.

the virtical lever has a bit that goes in the Centre hole.. the horizontal prongs go in the second hole and on the END of the height corrector lever..

ive no close up detailed pics to show you just now.

The ride height is perfect Malcolm its just I can't get the rear to full height from normal and the front, when at full height won't go to normal unless I go through low first.
Thanks Paul for the description.. I thought it was something like that.. I'll try again tomorrow. The turrets are a bit loose now.. worn with age... I don't suppose you'd have a rear bracket with the turrets on which the height corrector bolts on to?
You could add that to my list.

if they are just loose as they pivot thats how they are meant to be, unless they rock side to side on there spindles they will be ok

By worn I mean there's about half a millimeter of up and down movement on the spindle axis. I think that may be the problem. My speedo just passed 200k thats a total of 279580... things starting to wear out.
Paul if you could look one out for me and add it to the list let me know the price please?

Well after the rear brake pipes replacement yesterday I bled the brakes this morning and then had a nice visit this afternoon from Davie (Daviemck2006)and Rick (Qprdude) and had an eventually successful Lexia session on Davies C5.
After Davie had left I lay down once again under my car to try to figure out the rear HC problem.
Yes the carriers turrets have play in them and that was what was causing most of the problem the vertical turret bearing/pin had so much play in it that it was not engaging the roller into the center hole of the HC .. but also the far end spring of the horizontal turret had slipped out of its placement and was sitting about 4mm higher than the notch it was supposed to sit in.. missing the HC completely on one end.. that took about an hour and a half to figure out and fix..
After I'd got the spring end sorted. I ended up putting a small zip tie between the roller end of one turret and the ball on the other turret. that stops the play of the vertical turret, termporarily, and zip tying the dog bone on to the ball to stop that poping off...so hopefully I'm servisable till the hc carrier arrives from Paul.
Aren't zip ties handy????

Yes, in moderation. Just wait until you have to dismantle something and find zip ties every 2 inches along a 10 foot cable run.

I always bring a side cutter with me if I've seen ANY zip-ties in a place where I'll be working.
They open faster than any other type of fastener, once you accept they're not reuseable.
Replacing them all can be a bit tiresome, though.
I used a couple of them to reattatch the window to the regulator in a Xsara Picasso this week, after finding both of the plastic clippy things broken/distorted.
You'd never know there was anything bodgy about it, once all back together.
Customer was very pleased to get it back, working, so quickly and at no cost.
Unaccountably, the airbag light came on while I was doing this, despite me not having moved the seat...Grrrr!
Going to have to spend more unproductive time looking for that next week, once the new toy arrives!
