2.2HDi starter motor TORX bolts ?

Post by aramsay »

Hello.

I am currently on holiday in France with my '02 C5 2.2HDi and the starter moter is playing up, and I want to replace it.

I did not, however, bring any TORX tools/bits with me....

Can someone confirm what T-?? TORX bit fits the x3 mounting bolts please, so I can buy one locally.

While I'm here....priced a unit via Norauto website @ Euro-150.....sound OK ? Any other Halfords type places I should try ?

Thanks.

Could you not find a garage to replace it, should not cost too much. No need to waste money on tools and keep hands clean and enjoy the holiday.

I've been quoted Euro-350 for a new starter or E-250 for a recon one ! PLus the 200+ for labour, it would blow our holiday budget !

I work in a garage, so the job is no bother. I can get a starter for E-150 from Norauto, so just now need a TORX bit.........

So....can someone please help ?

Are you sure it's a torx? The bolts on my '03 2.0 HDi starter were 8mm hex (Allen key)

service.citoen shows the same bolts for all C5s (except V6). They certainly look like allen heads on the drawing, but there's plenty of artistic licence on there

You are correct, they're Allen screws, not Torx.

Apropos starter motor generally.
Had mine fail a month or so back (125k miles), brushes had pretty well disintegrated, two had actually disappered and what was left of the spring was acting as the brush. One would have thought there would have been some indication prior to the day it stopped but no.
First thought was a replacement, however after a bit of research discovered that the majority of units on offer were foreign clones, worse they were only rated at 1.7Kw the 2.2 Bosch unit is 2.3 Kw unit. In the end repaired the one I had.
Complete Brush assembly was about £25.00, had to arrange a clamp device to clamp the field connection to the brush plate as spot welding as per original not an option. Cut the connection out of the original brush holder with generous side wings thus allowing the fitting of two 4mm bolts to clamp the connection to the new plate.

Ah! forgot the answer to the question{ -) yes 8mm allan key and for one of them, the rear one as I remember it needs to be a short key, I had to cut one down to get in the space available.

Thanks all.

I couldn't see the bolt head, so just assumed it was a Torx. Nice of Mr.Citroen to have a nice easy Allen head....

While I'm here..itwould appear the solenoid part of the starter has become damp from oil or diesel dripping from above somewhere, causing mechanism to "stick". Something else tocheck when home......

My dads recently done these and I'm sure he said it was an 8mm Allan bolt head.

They are the same across the hdi range though so a motor from a 2.0hdi will fit and I be my you could even source one on eBay uk with postage cheaper than that as when I looked they were around £60 or so...

Yes you could fit a 2.0 ltr starter and probably a 1.6 as well but though they fit they ain't the same. The 2.2 starter motor is rated at 2.3 Kw and the 2.0 ltr @ 1.7 Kw some what less powefull. Would a 1.7Kw starter work in a 2.2? probably, though on a cold day with a battery that was down it might struggle a bit.

The £60.00 quid ones available of of E-bay and various parts vendors are generally rated at £1.7 kw and given their pedigree I would take that with a pinch of salt, you can find 2.3 Kw ones but they are more expensive. I did look for a recond Bosch starter and as I remember the price for such a beast was in the region of £120.00. Somebody in the trade explained it this way " we can sell a no name clone for a reasonable markup and get in return a genuine bosch unit which we can refurbish, generally for not a lot of money and sell back to the public as a genuine Bosch unit with a very lucrative markup. it's win win for us"

The Bosch is a quality bit of kit, some of the stories I read indicate that many of the cheap imports are not manufactured to anything like the same quality, it was for this reason that I decided to overhaul rather than replace.

I would advise anybody that has a 2.2 that has done 100K miles plus on the original starter to include replacing the starter motor brushes the next time they are considering doing some routine maintenance.

Just a point.. 1.6 hdi starters won't fit as they are on the Back of the engine... but all 2.0, 2.2 and 2.0 16v hdis are on the front as they are all dw family engines and 1.6 is a dv engine..
