Tracking

Post by froggy »

The F.N.S. tyre on my S1, is wearing on the inside ! The other tyres are ok.......the front tyres were fitted balanced and tracked December last year . is it possible the tracking is out on one tyre ? or could it be something else ? cheers Terry. :?:

Could be tracking - if there is too much toe out (a lot too much - normal is 0 to 3mm toe-out from memory) then one tyre will tend to take control and steer the car while the other tyre scrubs on the inside edge.

However before adjusting the tracking you would want to be sure that the tie rod joints are not worn out and that the lower arm bushes aren't worn out - if either of those are worn badly the effective wheel tracking will be constantly changing under dynamic conditions of cornering, braking, acceleration etc, and no adjustment of the tracking will fix it.

So check the condition of those first and then get the tracking checked/adjusted.

It could be that the wheel is not vertical, stand it on a level surface and check each wheel with a spirit level, they will lean in at the bottom slightly, that is the camber angle but they should both be about the same, if the n/s one is leaning the other way, worn bushes as Simon says.

You can't have one wheel out of track as the setting is the difference between the two wheels but the n/s tyre usually wears out faster then the o/s. Check the tread depth on the o/s wheel, you may well find that is also worn on the inside edge but not enough to be immediately obvious, if it is the toe in is to great.

I'd have to look up the specs again to be sure Peter, but from memory there shouldn't be any camber on the front wheels of a Xantia - eg 0 degrees. It's normal for there to be a slight amount of negative camber on the rear wheels though.

Ah, I didn't know that but at least comparing both sides should give a clue. Never had occasion to investigate the rear wheels on the XM.
