02 Xsara - Driver's air bag, bolts or clips?

Post by RichardW »

Place your bets....

Got to change the COM2000 on my Sister's Xsara this weeknd. Unsure if the airbag is held on with bolts or clips. Service.citroen shows bolts (off VIN), but there are plenty on e-bay with clips, and I found a youtube vid that showed clips on a similar age car.... I'd rather bolts of course, as I gather getting the clips off is a bit hit an miss till you know / can see what you are doing, which of course you can't till you've got the clips free, and the air bag off

Haha. The clips are a pig the first time you do them. However once you've got the hang of them, they're quicker to release than screws. I'd gladly pop them off for you if you were nearer. The Berlingo's wonky electrics have turned me into an expert at this.

That's a busy weekend you have planned Richard, COM2000 replacement, strut bearing replacement on the C4 - what are you doing for your third act ? :-D

Comm2000 should only be a 10min job if the airbag comes off easily. There's a chap up North who repairs the usual fault with them for less than most places charge for an hours labour.... and he includes taking it off and refitting it in that :O

I think it'll be a bit longer than 10 mins - but hopefully not too hard!

Remarkably, the spray grease I aimed in the general direction of the strut bearings last weekend has worked it way in, and stopped it graunching. Still going to change them though - otherwise no doubt will have a spring failure next week.

3rd act? Oil change on the Xsara, plus checking it over for MOT. Wonder if it might need the rear brakes stripping and cleaning.... :-D

PS If you're bored tomorrow, Simon..... :P

Believe it or not I've got a day out and about with SWMBO planned tomorrow or I would. Its not just cars that require maintenance apparently. :-D

If you get stuck on anything and are still going on Sunday let me know and I should be about.

Yep, models with com2000 have clips, models without com2000 have T-30 screws.
On xsaras the clips push in towards the centre of the wheel, on C5's they push away from the centre.

Job done, clips it was - took me a good while to manage to release the bottom one. Air bag light now stays off 8-)

Act 3 was to change the oil in the Xsara, then followed by fixing a leak in the exhaust with a baked beans tin and jubilee clips  It needs a new CV gaiter clip, and not sure the handbrake will be good enough - not sure what's up with it, but I suspect it needs new cables really.
