R4 1108cc Manifold studs

Unread post by Northern_Mike »

Well, due to an inlet-side leak causing a misfire on anything other than full throttle, I've got to fit a new inlet and exhaust manifold gasket to the R4 motor in the DRK.

It looks like both inlet and exhaust have to come off as some of the studs hold both on - can anyone confirm this?

Is there *anything* I can do to lessen the risk of the studs snapping before I attempt to undo them? Soaking them in plus gas or some other penetrant, or is it just a case of hoping they don't snap? I have a a good, spare head, fully reconditioned to go on, but I'd rather not have the hassle.

I cannot help on undoing the studs, but do you want to borrow my torque wrench to tighten them up afterwards?

That would be very kind James, thank you. I shall let you know when I have stopped staring at it wishing it was somewhere else, and started work on it!

Sorry I'm late to the party on this, don't come in 'ere often... How did you get on?

Yes, some of the nuts hold down both bits. The two bits might even be bolted together, they are in my experience*. Never had a stud snap, but have had an inlet manifold crack (my fault) and stripped a few manifold-head threads in the head.
