Not sure abut Mk1 but Mk2 isn't too bad. There are a couple of screws and bolts behind the wheel arch liner, one points up and one points in at the top corner, other than that IIRC all the other fixings are visible. If you have headlamp washers and/or fog lights then be careful to disconnect them before fully removing it.

There's the 10mm bolts underneath, the T20/T25 screw in each wheel arch into the wings, then the PITA 13mm bolts up in the front of the wheel arches that are about 2 miles too long and normally rusty.
The bolts may start easy, but the length that sticks out behind the captive nuts in the bumper gets very rusty, jams in the captive nuts and frees them so you end up turning away with a spanner and it's just spinning the bolt.
If this happens, the only solution I've found is to use a pry bar and pop the bumper off the captive nuts.

I agree with Stempy it's not that bad in MK2. No idea about MK1.
If the screws are not rusty they should come off easily. Remove inner wheel arch, at least the front part of it.

Fog lights have one connector, distributed with a Y-division to both lights.
Another Y-distribution for headlights jets.

I might add some pics if I find.

As Xac says. I did this with one of mine. If the captive nuts are seized, it's easier just to crowbar it off and put new bolts in when refitting. Dead easy in theory - undo the torx screws, undo the 13mm and it just slides off from the front - there's two big locating pegs approx either side of the car that the bumper locating pins sit in.

In this pic you can see where the 13mm bolt goes - the "lip" that stick down from the red wing below the bumper line, above the washer bottle. It's a bit of a sod to get at

Here you can see the "prongs" that stick out of the front that the bumper rests on under the headlight on the outer corner, and also the (in this case bent) bracket that the 13mm goes into through the bumper and wing..

Here is pic from a MK2 Xantia bumper removal where one of the main screws is seen.
Camera location: in front of front left wheel, pointing towards front of the car.
There is also the horn right in front of the camera (not seen) down behind the rectangular gap.
In the pic you can also see the screw hole from a different angle after the bumper was removed.

If you could postpone it until next weekend I would suggest you do so, and spend the interval spraying each bolt with Plus Gas. That probably will help with the rust.

Hi, trying to remove mine... Have removed vertical torx screw and 10mm head forward facing bolt, but bumper seems to still be secured.... Have removed sidelights but not sure if the 6mm hex bolt I can see has to come out? Late 2000 by the way.

I find they're much more of a problem on an S1.. On an S2 they are both smaller and shorter and as a consequence they seem to rust up less badly and often (for me at least) come out fairly easily..

As S1 on the other hand is always a 'mare...
