Citroen C5 Estate 2004 Mk1 MOT Fail help (Steering issue)

Post by howiedean »

Hi,

I've just had my C5 Estate MOT'd this morning an it has failed with - Excessive play in the top steering column bearing.
There were a couple of advisories but nothing major.
Has anyone here had any experience of this item, is it a nylon bush?

Regards,

Howie

not seen it on a C5 but the BX's have a rubber bush up in the lower end of the column support tube,
this bush used to slide down the steering column and out of the tube its meant to live in,

the fix was push it back up in then tap the lip of the tube over in a couple of place's,

Malcolm,

Thanks for the reply, The play is side to side which is why I was thinking the top bearing. Reading some of the earlier posts someone else mentioned a lower bush/housing.
I'll have a look at the car later as I'm stuck at work today.
I think the MOT fail is a genuine fail as the MOT station only do MOT's, that said it doesn't feel much worse than it did when I bought it over three years ago.

Howie,

Is it excessive play in the rack when they are checking ball joints ,track rod ends etc ?

Are the track rod ends okay and no or excessive movement in them.

The UJ joint on Xantia racks can cause this, due to wear. I check by place hand on UJ and getting an assistant to move the steering wheel side to side feeling for excessive play in UJ. Unfortunatily I don't know about C5's but I'm sure somebody on here will come back with a suggestion.

It is process of elimination.

Gents,

Quick update, lucky escape with this problem as the steering wheel had actually started to come loose. :(
I only spent 45 mins sorting it and most of that was waiting for the power to dissipate having disconnected the battery and moving the airbag out of the way.
Hopefully no one else finds that they have this issue although it's a cheap fix if they do!

Howie

Malcolm,

Well it hasn't been removed in my ownership. I remember there was some play when I 1st purchased the car, although it was very similar to that of a previous Xantia and I never realy thouht it was an issue. #-o
Two things to consider:
It wasn't tightened correctly previously.
It has passed three MOT's like this.

Anyway it has been sorted now.

Howie
