MPG results

Post by xantiagreen »

Filled up with Shell Vpowr Nit + 67 litres @ £140.9ppl 25/04/14, now on empty (unsure whether to fill up with Vpowr again or go back to Texaco diesel supreme @ £136.9 I think or standard fuelsave diesel.
Have covered 562 miles to empty, 82 miles was on motorway and the rest town driving, this car is only used for town driving (Motorway run was a one off). School run is 4 miles and after school studies is 8 miles, so 12 miles a day plenty of start stops car barely gets warmed up, remainder mileage all town driving, shops/friends/car booty all within 10 miles nothing above 40 mph.

Does this seem a respectable figure from a full tank for town driving? Just over 38mpg.

Which vehicle was it? If it is the Xantia shown as current, that is slightly low, even around town.

If that's for the 110 HDi in your signature then it seems very low...
I fill up with bog standard cheap-as-chips supermarket fuel mostly and get 600-660 miles from full to fuel light (~60-63l usually).
Granted my daily commute is 13 miles each way on highways, but still I generally find that no matter what sort of driving I do I count on getting something like 10 miles out of a litre of diesel.

I hold the belief that these diesel engines were designed with French muck from the mid 90's in mind - good fuel, bad fuel, it won't mind...it's probably head and shoulders above what it was like back then!

I would bet if its the HDi the problem is the short journeys. a long journey getting up to temp then thrashing for a bit will do no end of good as it clears the lot out and gets the injector tips hot enough to burn built up crud off.

Agreed KP, But maybe he should check out the back brakes? Lift the back end one at a time and check the wheels rotate freely.. if they come to a quick stop, then chances are you've got some corrosion between the mount and the brake caliper ( this has the effect of pushing the iner pads onto the disc all,of the time and uses a lot of fuel)which needs the removal of the calipers and scraping them clean before applying a layer of grease to help prevent it happening again.
I did this last year and went from about 750 miles per tank to 850-1000 depending on my route to work.
You coukld also try increasing tyre pressures slightly and have a look at this website... http://www.hypermiler.co.uk/hypermiling ... techniques" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

hope this helps,

Easier than that. After a quick drive pour some water into the wheels one at a time as soon as the vehicle stops. The one with steam coming off it is the one thats stuffed or sticking ;)

I've found grease is ok but gets pushed out so best to fully separate the two surfaces with some baking paper :) cut to size and hole as needed and job done...

I've found about a 3mpg difference between summer and winter purely because the engine gets up to working temperature quicker in the summer. My daily commute is 4 miles each way and the oil gauge barely even registers by the time i get to work in the winter.

Cheers all, will check the rear brakes but don't seem to have any problems with the rear brakes car seems to free roll but will use KP/morewood method sometime over weekend. Yes the car barely gets warm shortest journey would be 6 minutes start to finish and 15 minutes for the longest as it's town driving I do spend 2-3 minutes idling in traffic. Running on Total 5/30 no modifications, correct tyre size and tyre pressures original wheel trims. Suspension works fine rear takes a few extra seconds to raise and lower, all new spheres fitted Sept 2013 mileage is 112k. If it isn't the rear brakes what else could be causing the loss of mpg, would have a big grin if my xantia could do 900 on a full tank. Brother managed 490 miles on £30 of diesel in a Y reg Polo 1.9 sdi, still my cars better.

Thanks in advance

Thats because he was being overtaken by slugs and 3 toed sloths. Never have i driven a car slower than a VW 1.9sdi engine minus the turbo.

Tyre pressures, type of tyres, weight in the car, brakes binding, A/C on, style of driving, type of roads and surfaces, flat roads, hilly roads, other traffic, weather, use of the gearbox, keeping revs under 2000, so many variables it's impossible to compare fuel consumption between cars, other than a ball park figure.
You can only use trial and error in your own car to get the best results you can, then stick to the best procedure.

How long since its last service? I regained a fair few MPG after replacing my air filter with a nice clean one

I ran my first diesel in 1959 and have run them continuously for the last 30 years and have never noticed any difference with different fuels. Its mostly down to how and where you drive. We live in a rural area and I seldom exceed 60 mph or 2000 rpm and average around 50mpg from my 406 Hdi with figures well in excess of 60mpg on long journeys.

Ambient temperature does make a lot of difference to consumption, a couple of years ago on our annual north of Scotland trip the temperature was near freezing on the way then it suddenly turned warm and was in excess of 25C when we came home, fuel consumption? around 60 mpg going up 67.8 on the way back, over 1000 miles on a tankful.

When I bought the xantia I had a full service including lhm flush, new discs pads all round, did not change the glow plugs. Exhaust is good no blows Lexia says everythings ok, but not sure what the correct measurements are for the injectors spray on idle and rev, haven't asked mechanic as yet to check in case he say's I don't know (citroen specialist). The car drives and sounds perfect to me just the mpg I suppose, does anyone else seem to feel as if the gearbox is loose when you drop speed from 2nd, 3rd gear around 20mph and then same when you increase speed, seem to hear like a knocking noise...

I notice the Xantia likes temperatures above 10C.. much better starting, fuel consumption and suspension.
I seem to have a hesitation on starting, more like a burp, below 8 or 9C which has disappeared in the last couple of weeks ( above 10C) The fuel consumption is also heading the right way.. its been 55 over the winter .. last fill nearly 57 .. I don't expect to get back to the 64 of last year.. My wife has changed her job and the 40 mile commute with almost no traffic on a fairly level road has gone.

Baking paper.. what a great idea.

Re mpg I was down on miles at the half tank stage this fill.. 360 rather than at least 450.
I had the bonnet open releasing suspension pressure and heard the faint chuff chuff of an injector fire seal leaking.. had a closer look and sure enough there was the black tar all around the No.4 injector..
Once I'd softened the tar with thinners and brake cleaner. I replaced the fireseal and cleaned up the injector and surrounds, making sure I'd blocked the injector hole to stop debris. now running fine again.
My point is that the sound was completely masked, when the bonnet was closed and was only just audible with the bonnet open and the engine cover on.. might be worth checking.
