C5 2.0. Hdi playing silly whatsits again

Unread post by Peter.N. »

As I normally drive very gently, coming up the Axminster bypass yesterday I though I would open it up and blow the soot out of the exhaust, it lunged forward leaving a cloud of soot behind it and then stopped leaving the engine light on, after several unsuccessful tries to start it I waited until the ECU shut down and the displays went off which entailed switching the hazard lights off! It then started and was OK the rest of the way home except that the light is still on. Any suggestions?

The air filter looks new and I changed the fuel filter not long ago and my Lexia still isn't working.

Hi Peter,

I'd say it's a toss up between MAF, boost sensor or rail pressure.

But without a Lexia it's trial and error.

Mind you, somebody had a problem with their car in that, when they accelerated hard the engine didn't keep up. It turned out there was a flake of paint in the fuel line, restricting the fuel flow;

If it stopped like the engine was switched off, then it will be the fuel pressure reg (stops like it was switched off, becuase essentially it was). This was the problem Paul was having with this Xantia - the FPR can't keep up, so rail pressure drops, so the ECU winds the FPR out, then when it gets to 97% it thinks there must be a leak on the rail and shuts the engine down for safety reasons. No idea why there seems to have been a spate of these recently - Paul went through 3 or 4 before he found one that works. jgra1 has been through 5 ( and now has the one off my Xantia to fit) - although his was giving startig trouble.

Fitted my 6th FPR this morning.. car now starts again without easy start.. I suspect whatever problem I have will just keep coming back..
I wonder if the in-tank pump is dying, and taking the FPR out at regular intervals..

just not a clue really.. all I know is that another PR in the car, and it starts ok in the morning for a few weeks.. then back to easy start,,

been like this since October..

anyway, my car has never ever stopped running. ..

I had this fuel regulator problem before and found that the filter clogs up and is almost impossible to clean, so as some of them don't seem to have a filter I took it off mine and its been fine - until now. I am waiting for my Lexia to be sorted, its beaten me, so hopefully I will be able to find the problem when I get it back.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

John, take the intank assembly out and run the tank empty, i bet there is some gunge on the surface of the tank that wont be helping much, all diesels do it as they get older :(

Have you been getting the FPR's swapped back under warranty or been using used ones? Maybe try leaving them sitting in vinegar and baking soda for a while and see if it recovers them if you have the old ones :)

I had considered that Paul but the cost being a fair proportion of what I paid for the car and being tight as well I'm still thinking about it. :?

thanks KP

mine are all used ;)
Richard W's latest one gave me a good start this morning, only 4 turns, which could be a personal best :)

I may cut one of my spare regs open and see if anything obvious is up..
anyone else want to try too? plenty of spare ones ;)

Its been the filter on mine that's caused most problems, from hunting to non starting when hot, after I removed it all was well - until now.

Well peter WITHOUT sounding harsh, if your not gonna try one, you cant really moan about the issue! If you had put a new one in and it didnt work then fair enough.. I could understand..

As I found with mine, I had THREE - Yes Three faulty ones ALL giving me the same issue of cutting out under load! A new one solved the issue straight away.
