Stripping C5 - what should I keep??

Post by hamster99 »

Hi All

I have been given a minor! ultimatum from SWMBO so it’s time for me to finally strip my 2005 VTR and reclaim my driveway.

My thoughts are that I should keep as many of the “useful” bits as possible as they should all fit my current 2005 Exclsusive so I wondered what the views were about keeping the following or anything else I may not have thought about.

Front headlight units (xenon directional)
Rear light clusters
Side repeaters
Starter motor (it was new a few months before I had to retire the car)
Fuses/Relays
Centre console/fascia switch modules
Window switches
Parking sensors
Front spot lights
Interior lights
High level brake light
Tow bar wiring
Boot lock
Wing mirrors
Radio module/CD Changer
BSI and other electronic modules
Wiper motors
Electric window motors
Various internal trims

I can’t keep any of the bigger body items like doors, bonnet, boot etc.

Cheers

Rob

I'd add:
Central locking actuators,
Alternator
Stalks and column shrouds
Steering wheel
Callipers
Discs if they are good

As you're not allowed to keep the whole car, however much you save, you'll subsequently find that there are various things you wish you'd kept and years later lots of bits that you end up taking to the tip!

Anyone want a set of Maestro rear lights?

Unfortunately I know from experience that the parts you keep you are unlikely to use but you will need something you throw away, so stick to the parts that are likely to give trouble.

If its a diesel I would keep the HP and in tank pumps and the hydraulic pump as they are parts that do fail. You could probably sell some of the other bits on ebay. Door handles break to.

Im not sure if the 16v 2.0 have a Tank pump, not been involved with them enough yet..

DEFO keep the Comms 2000 colum stalk unit without a doubt. However, as for what to keep, this becomes a white herring!

Ive had this from Xantia strip downs, people say oh keep this keep that, I have and do, but then when you come to sell, no one wants anything! I have stripped cars to a shell.

From your engine size's they are face lift cars. Yes keep headlights, they are large units and if Zenon can be expensive.

Struts and top assemblies, I know they arent exactley the same as Xantia/XM units, but a couple of failures have cropped up with them so could be worth stocking.

Is the engine completely dead?

Window switch's - yes..
Id say all your list above.. KEEP! Window winders YES, I can see these being a problem in years to come like Xantia/XM ones have been..

Keep the motors and flaps on the heater box that seem to go (mine included) had it got leather seats I would have had them. The things that went on my last one were starter, alternator, the auto climate control module. I don't really know of any other things that go regularly.

Hi, I am needing the plastic trim bit which fits over the back lip of the boot and catch for the lock. I would be willing to pay if you wanted to flog it?
C'est pas possible!

Thanks all for the useful replies. I have now added the following to my list:
Xenon headlamp washer system
Engine sensors, airflow sensor, inlet electrovalves
Central locking actuators
Alternator
Callipers
HP pump
Comms 2000
Door handles
Radiator/Cooling fan assembly
AC condensor
AC compressor
Electric steering pump
Front & Rear height adjusters

As for other suggestions:

The hydraulic suspension pump is dead. That and the badly corrroded hydraulic pipes were the reason I had to get another one, although if I knew then what I now know about C5's I would have repaired them myself......c'est la vie...!!!

Can't take the front struts off as need to keep the car moveable.

Already had the whole heater box out as the flaps went on my other car but have kept the stepper and blower motors and wiring loom etc as spares

There was nothing wrong with the engine and gearbox but I have since taken a couple of bits such as EGR valve and water pipes etc.

Do you think its worth keeping some other engine stuff like injectors/fuel rails water pump, vacuum pump......???

Is the cat/dpf worth anything?

jgra1 - PM me with exactly which internal door handle you need with pic or diagram if poss

boris - you're welcome to have the boot trim if it's what you need. Is your C5 a hatchback? send me a PM

Finally, if anyone else has a need for something send me a PM. Can't promise I'll have everything and it may be some time before I get everything off.
