Early ('94) Xantia rear not raising!

Post by reanimation »

My poor old Xantia threw us a curve ball today. It's been a trooper this car even as a daily, but now is a bad time, as doing some distance at the end of may, and MOT due. Arrgh. Booked on tomorrow AM!

The rear of the car just got bouncy! I was carrying 2 heavy alloy wheels in the boot, not usually an issue is it? But after pulling over for lunch it got a bit bouncier. It's 4-5 years since I fitted new spheres all round from GSF, though it must be that time again. But it's just not raising at the rear. :?:

It's 20 year old and a list of niggles and thought to be original strut tops still hanging on but making me nervous... as much as I'd like to hang on, if its not a cheap fix it might be time to sell it on to enthusiasts. Any one ready and willing? :idea: #-o

Problem I have is my mechanic isn't a Citroen specialist. So what are we looking for? What's likely to be the prob? :?:

I've not been tinkering for 2 months due to a bike accident breakage and now limited fix time, limited strength too.
Cheers [-o<

Sounds like the height corrector "arms" might be sticking or the dogbone has popped off or broken. Neither are expensive to sort though you'll need it on stands or ramps to sort it out. Never go under a hydropneumatic Citroen without it being supported.

Thank you I did a very brief panic search online. I'm sure it will be on a ramp tomorrow will see if this makes sense to mechanic. Where about are these parts? Near the rear spheres?

It's a plastic link connecting the height corrector to the anti-roll bar.

Have a read of this..

if the dogbone has in deed popped of or the metal arm/link it connects to on the rear anti roll bar has sheared,

this is usually caused by the height corrector linkage turrets being seized up, the only way fto fix this long term, is remove the height corrector cradle from the car,
then lub and work it lub and work it lub and work it lub and work it lub and work it , till the turrets are floppy free,

then smother the hole lot in the likes of motor bike chain grease

It looks like height corrector was the cause, it's got a temp fix, so should be alright for a bit. I think that's all the problem was, thank goodness. Got 12.5 months MOT. Hurrah!

Thank you.
Might need a new part then...

It could be worth overhauling the height corrector. CitroJim has instructions on how to do this;

here is the link to Citroen Classics web site for the height corrector rubbery bit

http://shop.citroenclassics.co.uk/heigh ... -253-p.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

although the actual height corrector very very seldom give trouble,

its usually the linkages/turrets seizing that cause 99% of the issues

Ah this might make sense why the word 'leak' was used. Thanks for info on the repair. I don't think it is leaking but I might need a new plastic link.
