Clean diesel filter housing

Post by JohnCKL »

I just discovered my 96 XTD fuel filter housing was full of black dirt at the bottom of the housing! I suspected something amiss when I opened the drain screw but nothing came out, even when I unscrew the whole thing off! Actually I discovered later, supposed to open up the housing a little, so that the atmospheric pressure will cause the diesel to flow out the drain screw or alternatively pump priming. I opened up the housing, taking precautions by wrapping a piece of thick cloth around the housing to prevent any diesel spilling onto the clutch below. Took out the filter and saw a lot of black stuff on the bottom of the housing. Used a small diameter clear hose to suck out all the dirt, quite a bit with even some metallic specks! Don't know if it happens to you guys or is it the diesel over here is that dirty! After cleaning, pump prime a few times and better starting after that.
