Strut tops and sick Xantia

Post by gxantia »

Hi all, I have a 1993 Xantia 1.9td sx which is in need of saving. The nearside front strut top is a goner. Now I thought I could replace it with a mark2 strut top, bought one off ebay. All seems to fit, but the thread fro the hydraulic pipe is different. My father has a mk2 and the thread look to be the same. What car does my strut top with a thread around 12mm come from? Can I fit an adapter to make my pipe fit the strut thread.

Oh and if the mount can be fixed, does anyone know were I can get some boot trim. Slight incident with a welder when welding up the rear nearside wing has several bits of trim slightly burnt.

Have a word with taffy. IIRC he had this problem and overcame it. Could be worth checking out this post;

So I have hydra-active strut tops. So is it possible to get a spacer to reduce the size of the pipe feed from 10mm to 3.5mm?

I wouldn't know, as Gracie has the basic suspension. However, I think either taffy or citroenxm could give you better information.

This post is far more comprehensive;

I theory yes and easy enough for an engineer to knock one up on a lathe but far better to arrange a swap with someone with a normal strut top. Hydractive ones are really quite rare and valuable...

So should I save those from the VSX regardless of condition?

Yes, because KingAS in Lithuania can rebuild them...

It's also possible for a good engineering works to drill out non-Hydractive ones to take the larger Hydractive unions but some distinct care is needed to get it right.

NO you DO NOT have a Hydractive Strut top...

You have bought a Strut top from a LATE V, W or X reg car.. These cars for a short while were fitted with a 12mm type pipe feed, with a completely different fitment into the top! they are completey UNIQUE to those age of cars and are NOT compatible UNLESS you got a bit of feed pipe with the top, where you can have a join made to take your exsisting pipe!!

S2 tops from S, T and early V reg cars will work, from an LX or SX model, but NO NEWER!

Hydractive tops are 17mm Nuts! Far bigger again!

Your bought strut top would of had the following type of connection:

Non expert breakers will NOT know this difference, as its only when the pipe is removed and the sharp eye that spots the 12mm NUT rather then the original 8mm

you need one of these and a 8x8 mm inline joiner to go between...

dont hyper active cars require the extra citro blood flow/higher volume as requiring the larger diameter feed pipes to the strut tops,
in which case wont it cause a problem/difference one side to to the other in strut reaction rate/speed, if you reduce/bottle neck the feed down to 3.5??
