Xantia 1.9TD poor mpg

Post by EDD »

I have noticed an increase in fuel consuption over the past couple of months.I recon I'm only getting 30-34 mpg compared with well over 40 when I first got the car.Mileage is 107k it still drives well but the odd time there is a slight hesitation (missfire)at very low revs. This is my first diesel so I do'nt know where to start looking first.
Any idea's gentlemen?

With a diesel - the first place to look for poor mpg returns - is the air filter.
It's not uncommon to have this replaced every 6Kmiles (10Kkm) - or cleaned if re-useable (foam filters).
Same goes definately for engine oil & filter.
Next step is checking the glowplugs afterglow - also a likely problem as pr your description.

Sounds daft but its well worth having a look at the fuel tank to see if its dry or wet. If its wet probably a breather hose at the top of the tank has split. This happened on our 94 ZX D.
