What's the significance of 09/11/1976?

Post by Old-Guy »

RP numbers effectively start with 1 for 9th November 1976. Does anyone know what is the significance of this particular date?

Quick search found these two related links, but not much more in detail about the ORGA system: http://www.cats-citroen.net/citroen/organumber.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; & http://www.eurocarcare.net/orga.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Probably just an arbitrary starting point when some new tracking system was introduced.

Much like "UNIX time" which is the date/time representation used by UNIX systems (including Linux) where date and time is defined as the number of seconds since midnight January 1970 ! (And has the problem of wrapping around in 2038 if it continues to be a 32 bit number...)

Funny, that reminds me that the GS only had a 5 digit odometer that could only read up to 99999 - on a GS sold in a KM/hr country like NZ that meant that our GS wrapped the odometer back to zero at least twice in its life. (I don't recall exactly what mileage it died at but it must have been about 250,000 km)

it will just be the date that PSA rolled out their new computer system. Much like the 1983 date when the DVLA computerised their records or the same as when you look up parts for any car there will be a specific VIN where a part is different - these things have to start somewhere.

I mean what's significant about 6th May 1994? It's just the first day you could put your car on a train between FR and UK. There's nothing really 'special' about it.

Most cars did in those days, not sure when it changed. I think my 1984 BX only had 5 digits, so maybe it was when they went electronic to prevent (so they thought) clocking.

I went to Twickenham aeons ago to see England play Romania. The big electronic scoreboard only goes up to 99. Sometime during the second half England were renamed "England 1".

Good to know that UNIX time is different from Microsoft time which is different from apple time in terms of its base date. Day 1 Microsoft is 1 January 1900, Mackintosh its 1904. If you are really into these things, Excel has a bug inherited from Lotus 123 which it emulated to make conversion easier. It treated 29 February 1900 as a day (which it wasn't, 00 years are never leap years) so if you work out the age of someone born before 28 February 1900 they come out as one day older than they are.

This has nothing to do with the original question, but hey ....

09/11/1976 returns day 35378 in excel so that's not significant either. Peugeot (PSA) bought a bit of Citroen in 1974 but took their majority share from 9 April 1976. As someone suggested, maybe its the date the combined computer system went live. But - it was a Saturday. Odd.

Saturday makes the most sense for a day to switch on a new computer system, as little people as possible at work to potentially disrupt. The same reason that server maintenance is normally done in the early hours of the morning.

I seem to remember Volvo getting some marketing mileage (sorry!) out of the fact that they used six-digit odometers, as their cars regularly exceeded 99999 miles.

Precisely the reason this very forum is backed-up at 4AM every morning...

It's fairly quiet then...

Yes, is only the Australian guy who post then I think. Perhaps me too, from hospital...

Volvo even have an officially endorsed high mileage register. You can get bronze, silver or gold grille badges if your car exceeds 150k, 250k, 300k.

Now, that I didn't know!
My Volvo already qualifies for the bronze and is well on the way to silver.
Imagine finding that out on a Citroen forum.
How do I go about claiming, do you know?

Fantastic, thanks.
Any danger of a similar scheme being set up for Citroen?
Somebody driving around in a GS, or better yet a CX, wearing a 500,000M badge would do wonders for the reputation!
This year Cit's going to turn 250,000M and I'd love to advertise that fact when it happens!
I realise nobody on here will think that's anything special, but the general public, especially the trade, will certainly think thats quite an anomaly!
After all, everybody knows French cars (especially Citroens) start to fall apart before they leave the dealer's forecourt and cost megabucks to keep going from there on.
Only since getting mine have I realised that this reputation is not entirely fair. Indeed I came very close to having the kind of experience that perpetuates the poor rep. I almost scrapped her, due to a very embarrassing first couple of months of ownership, but she's pretty safe from that now!
She'll never be the disposable clunker she was bought to be, because there seems to be something about different drivers that makes her throw her toys out of the pram, but as my own personal transport she's doing great. Now all I need to do is keep justifying such extravagance to SWMBO, or Cit'll end up in Volvo corner because I can't bear to let her go!
There's one for sale "for parts only", for very little money, and I had the devil of a job resisting it.
Hope I don't end up regretting that 8-[

Mercedes do the same thing, at least in the US. The W123 crowd there get quite excited about it, to the extent I think some of them would clock UP.
