2.2 Hdi engine - What to look for.

Post by gadgetgricey »

Basically have the 8v Hdi 110 engine in the Xantia which I love, but (and dont shoot me  ), keep getting drawn to the Pug 406 Coupe with the 2.2 Hdi engine as a daily driver. Would love the V6, but that's never going to happen as daily transport

Is this the same engine as in the C5, as seem to recall a few bods having issues with this engine and it not being as reliable as the 8V hdi.

Just asking for opinions/views on the 2.2 hdi

Cheers

Dave

Yes it is Dave!

So C5 issues should also count here too! (Engine ones of course!) My advise, avoid, pay a bit MORE and go for the later 2005 onward 2.0 16v 138bhp engine instead. These so far have prooved GOOD. The head is a cross flow design and from what Ive seen the injectors DO NOT go through the inlet manifold, and if the head needs to come off should be far less faff... also the 2.0 16v is better on fuel too..

Got a 2.2 and been great in the 3.5 years of owning. Had the injectors out before and came straight out.
As said not as good on fuel as 2.0 versions but hey I wanted the 2.2 C5 mk1. What ever has been needed has been done including additive top up and only use decent Shell fuels to help keep engine cleaner.

It all depends on how the previous owners look after the car and having good service history.

Cheers both.

Apologies Wayne, but did make me chuckle that your signature shows your 2.2 has had an engine change.

The 2.2 173 in my X7 is terrific. Don't,t know what year Pug you are looking at but the 2.2l is just a wee bit more advanced than the ones in the earlier cars I believe.

If your thinking it will be anywhere close economy wise then run away quickly!!

IMO if your looking at the coupe see about a V6 with LPG.. much more fun and probably work out cheaper to run as well :) probably the best engine Power to Weight ratio wise, no turbo lag or additives to worry about or DMF's....

Yeah the engine was changed, yes the C5 suspension does go up high but it does not mean you can drive through flood water.

what happens when you drive in floods: " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Apart from this small problem car has run fine.

The early 2.2 engine is rubbish on fuel, don't know what the later one is like.

Ain't a great deal better Peter. Figures show combined mpg of 43, but I don't even achieve that on the motorway! Albeit usually fully laden and driven rapidly. At a steady 60, I get a return of circa 45. If economy isn't vital, the 2.2 is a powerful, responsive beast. I've had no problems so far, apart from oil consumption of a litre in 5000 miles or so. Also sounds a wee bit agricultural from outside the cabin when cold. ( the engine, not me)

My dads gets into the 40's on the motorway but around town he says its just shocking.

That water video was purely as soon as the water gets upto the level of the chevrons in the front grille your toast as thats where the air is often drawn in for the engine :( thats when your need a car bra to insulate the engine bay and keep a small amount of air in, in the xantia you can spin the airbox 180' and it works very well as the floodwaters around doncaster many years ago helped me test in my old TD xantia i had then :)

So is not really so reliable if most expensive part of the engine fail? ... I am thinking apart from pump and injectors, is not much else to fail if engine maintained well.

The only part that had failed was the pump regulator on mine but I changed all of it to find the fault.

original injectors are still ok

thats 277,000 uk MILES not kilometers too.
