C5 2.2hdi Depollution Fault but Swirl Actuator fixed

Post by kooky1976 »

Hiya - I have a 2004 C5 2.2HDi Exclusive auto with 34k on the clock (genuine as I bought the car from my friend last September who was the first owner and the mileage was 18k at that point). I've done 16k trouble free but all of a sudden the other day the depollution error popped up and won't go away. The only symptom I had was that I was lacking power upon kickdown. The fault is coming up as the EGR valve. I had a look under the bonnet at the weekend with the intention of unbolting the EGR and giving it a clean (I'm used to this as I have had 3 SAABs). I noticed the swirl actuator valve plastic ball socket that connects to the swirlpot valve lever was broken so I've popped on a new one, and the power symptom has disappeared. In fact the car drives really nicely. I deleted the fault in the hope that what I had done had fixed the problem, but the fault has popped back up again.

Anyway, when Googling, I find loads of people moaning about their EGR valves, but nothing that helps in explaining the removal process. I see it's behind the engine with some kind of water jacket but it looks like it'll be an awkward job.

Any ideas? And is it really a good idea to just blank it off? I don't like the sound if it. Sounds messy

You could try a can of wynns egr cleaner and or something like forte fuel treatment. I would not blank mine off as I like to keep things standard and working.

If I remember correctly the swirl flaps are syncronised with the egr and if they become unsynced they have to be recalibrated with lexia also something to do with the air dousers in the inlet pipes (don't quote me but I'm sure this is right)

Not heard that before. The flaps should open at approx 2100 revs

You'll need to be a bit more specific about the fault code / details. "it's the EGR valve" covers a lot of ground!
