all change at Citroen

Post by boristhespie »

So Peugeot is going upmarket to compete, I guess, against VW or Audi or BMW? Citroen will be the "value" brand so will this mean an end to the "German" C5?

DS will become a seperate brand.

I always thought Citroen was that value brand designed for people with more sense than money, hence the use of hatch backs rather than saloons, and superior suspension, while Peugeot were for people with not a lot of money but cared a bit more about what others thought.
Peugeot take on VW or Audi? That's not going to work well, the drivers of those brands have too low a view of Pugs. DS on it's own? Well, people are still going to say it's a Citroen, but that hasn't seemed to dull the attraction, and as someone said "Citroen took the BMW Mini, slapped Chevrons on it and somehow made it MORE attractive" so it could work.

What's not going to work is "It (PSA) would, however, double the use of "low-cost parts sourcing" to 40%." In other words, becoming dependant on unreliable supplies of variable quality parts from third-world countries."
China is rapidly ceasing to be a low-cost source of anything - a similar story to Japan in the second half of the twentieth century but in a very much shorter time scale.

Sadly i think people in general have too lower view of French cars in general. But swear by German metal. I mean look at how Jaguar are struggling to make a dent in the german strangle hold on the premium car marker, yet they're just as good.

I mean people will buy a Turbo charged mini cooper S and rave about how good it is, yet deride a Peugeot Gti, then get upset when you point out they have the same engine.

You'll have Ford owners who'll tell you how good their diesel engine is, but then tell you how all French cars are unreliable rubbish - again they get upset if you tell them their engine is PSA unit, then they'll start telling you how it's all a Ford design and PSA buy them, or it's a joint development and Ford made them reliable - In reality Ford diesels were knocky smokey old things until they started using the PSA designs.

Yep. What little OEM parts supply there currently still is for hydraulic Citroens will be getting switched off pretty quickly now I suspect...

It was already announced nearly 6 months ago that Hydractive would no longer be produced once the C5 ends production. :(

These latest changes are more like the final nail in the coffin for Citroen as we knew it. Very sad.

While Citroen do come up with innovations, they are famous for their Hydro Pneumatic suspension. Getting rid of that is stupid. It would be like Burger King getting rid of the Whopper (how do their ads go? 'Burger King. Home of the Whopper'). Where are people to go when they want a car with exceptional ride comfort?

I thought manufacturers were legally bound to supply parts up to 10 years after production is discontinued?

About ride comfort apart from Hydractive. Doubtful whether it will come at a similar price but both Mercedes and Land Rover (disco and RR)(I think) have a super comfortable suspension system.

If asked a few months ago, I would have said Citroen were the top brand, while Pug were more the rep-mobiles and boy racer hot-hatches. Surprised to learn that the Citroen will be the lesser brand.

A couple of years ago, I collected a brand new (-3 miles on the odometer) Focus Estate 2.0 with a Duratorq engine. Loud, rough engine, (though it went like a scalded cat) with a harsh, crashy ride. On a hundred+ mile cross-country trip, it's tendency to skitter towards the verge on every badly-surfaced RH bend was very wearing (evidently designed to the same standards as the Transit!) - I might add I was under strict time constraints. Dropped it off, and climbed into the old Xantia to do a personal errand; absolute bliss - quiet, comfortable ride with predictable handling on badly surfaced roads. I know which I'd have rather driven all day!

all change at Citroen

Post by John Plum »

When I was a boy, I was told by my brother that Citroen's were the luxury , high spec French car. It's the one their president was driven around in. He told me mainly Doctors in UK liked them because they were so smooth and comfortable ( but cheaper than a Rolls which only millionaires drove) and they had a nerve-wracking job. :-)

I suppose the French are under pressure to stop being French in so many ways, and become a uniform Grey/European.

Had a Ds3 as a loan car. To be honest, it seemed reasonably well put together and fairly smooth.

As a loaner, it was OK, but boy was I glad to get back into my Hydractive 3 C5.

It's not LHM I'd be worried about, there's plenty of 3rd party suppliers of LHM and its not rocket science to make an equivalent oil. Its specialised parts I'd be worried about. What 3rd party supplier is going to provide height correctors and suspension struts, etc, let alone something like a Hydractive computer ?
