Second sump bung...?

Post by sparksie »

Hi all
Something I've wondered about before, but never found anybody to ask, was just brought back to mind.
While pottering about under Cit's bonnet, I noticed the second sump bung, on the front vertical face of the sump.
It's about an inch up from the bottom and looks to be the same as the bung in the bottom of the sump.
Anybody know what it's for?
I've noticed it on other applications of the XUD engine, though can't say whether it's on them all.
It's too low to be any kind of a level plug and would only be of any use as a drain if the engine was canted over at an impossible angle.
Cheers guys

Can confirm that's the case: the dummy 'sender' (no pins in the socket!) and fully-wired plug on the Green Lady ('95 spec 1.9TD sx) had me very puzzled. Next time I drove the VSX ('98 spec), I realised that it has a different instrument panel with an oil temp gauge. Next time I was underneath, I checked its sender - two actual pins! Mystery solved.
I presume that at the engine plant, all XUDTD engines went out with a dummy sender, just as all cars were fitted with a loom catering for all options. Keeps production control simpler and allows for late changes to schedule and/or spec. - if a panel with temp gauge was fitted, then the sender was changed for a real one. I can't help wondering if the cost difference between real and dummy senders justified this.

Ok, that makes sense.
No dummy sender here, though, just a bung that looks to be the same as the one in the bottom.
The others I've seen have all been the same.
Had me scratching my head, any time I've noticed them.
Must look out for it next time I do anything on a 206, or similar.

The Green Lady has a steel sump (no question, it's gone slightly rusty in one area!). Having said that she is a bit of an oddity, being one of the very last pre-96 spec units (built Jan 96). I believe that the engine is one of the very last XUD9s with no electronics on the (Bosch) pump, and no EGR. Perhaps there was a batch of steel sumps with bosses for temp senders and one of the last of those got 'used up' on this run-out engine.

Hmm.
Cit is a 2000 reg 1.9TurboD, with XUD9 engine and steel sump.
Most of the bungs I've personally noticed have been in steel sumps, on a range of cars from the PSA stable.
Oh well. I suppose I should just be content to know that they're French and being "different" is paramount!
