Hi all,
After a number of oil changes the sump thread has seen better days. At the moment the sump plug is slightly moist, the weep seems to have slowed down. I have bought a new copper sump plug washer as the old one really needed changing and may stop the leak when I get a chance to put on but I cant tighten the plug more than a finger tight pressure due to the partly missing thread ....does anyone know of any simple fixs, different type of washer / fibre / rubber? - the car is getting on a bit and just needs to be nursed for a year or two....so not looking to change the sump... I read somewhere a few wraps of plumbers PTFE tape can work??
Thanks for any suggestions
Jeff

These came new with a hollow copper washer which should be changed every time. If you reuse them, the bung has to be tightened tighter every time to prevent a leak. I always use a dowty washer which lasts almost forever. They are for sealing banjo bolts and the like on hydraulic systems etc. They only cost a few cent but are easier to get in places supplying the farmer or heavy plant than in a place supplying car parts. As far as I recall the 8 valve hdi sump bung is normally 14mm.
Beware of looking at BSP sizes. 1/2" is about 20mm. 3/8" is about 16mm I think.
These ones on EBay should do but are a bit expensive

I have had this problem with my 406 Hdi since I bought it, 10 turns of PTFE tape should cure it.

Same problem with my C4 caused by some gorilla at A----d C---k over tightening the sump plug. I bought a Helicoil type kit from ebay to repair the M14 x 1.25 thread which I intend to use at the next oil change.

We do a repair with a Wurth timesert. Costs about £40 and is far better than the Origional.

We tap them out to the next size, though haven't had to do a PSA one yet.
Opel (Vauxhall) and VW seem prone to this and we have a selection of large taps and bungs that works for them.
It wasn't me that sourced them, so I don't know what size/thread they are, though I suspect they're not metric.
