Hi There,
Im new to this forum and french cars in general and would really like your help with this one!!
so to begin the saga I bought a c5 2.0hdi last year with the engine blown/cracked head and noisy bottom end. replaced the engine with a good s/h engine and got it going but and sounds lovely!! it revs to 3000rpm then stutters followed by grey smoke after this point. up till then it drives fine with no smoke once its kept below 3000rpm! any advice would be appreciated. Iv checked all the vacuum pipes and the egr valve. not so sure where to go from here. Also the Car will not start unless you actually put an earth wire fro the ECU casing to an earth point on the car!
thanks in advance.
Paddy

If this is an early C5 with the 8 valve engine they are normally bombproof, I have two of them with over 200,000 miles, it must have been very badly treated to fail. I would first try unplugging the MAF if it improves it needs replacing. The only other problem I have had is with the pump pressure regulator, these have a filter in them which can clog.

Welcome, Paddy!
When you earth the ECU casing for start, do you then remove it? And how did you find
that was what was needed?
You will likely get several ideas of causes for the 3k rpm limit, and one is that the fuel
filter may be crudded.
They do get filthy and can cause symptoms similar to yours. A friend with a Peugeot
with the 1.6HDI engine had just that problem and just that cure - a new filter.
Good luck.

Hi sorry only seen your reply now. The smoke and stuttering was down to a waste gate valve being stuck. The ecu casing was earthed because it wouldnt start at all and remembered working on a loading shovel where all the ecu s were earthed to the body so i took a chance on it and it worked.
Thanks
Paddy.
Thanks
