1999 Xantia TD De Catted - MOT issue

Post by ecohouse1 »

Hi

Slightly confused about this, my Xant TD is going for its first MOT since I decatted it last May after the pipe failed just fore of the cat. I fitted a straight through pipe and the car runs better with good torque and better mpg.

There appears to be an MOT update stating that is a cat is missing from a vehicle that was originally fitted with one, this is an automatic fail? In which case I am in doodoo on Friday when I go along!!

I was under the impression that as long as the car is within the HC and smoke emmisions it was fine?

Anyone else had issues this year presenting a decatted diesel at MOT?

Cheers

Shouldn't be a problm - missing CAT is only a problem on petrol engines - although missing DPF on later diesels is now a fail.

you will be fine, im sure the/any new rules in or coming in will be relating to cars produced after a certain date,
which would certainly be after 1999

The rules changed in Feb 2014 and the MoT manual (http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4s07000101.htm) now states:

"7.1.3. On spark ignition engine vehicles that qualify for a full catalyst emissions test and all compression ignition vehicles check the presence of catalytic converter(s) and particulate filter(s)." The reason for rejection states "A catalytic converter or particulate filter missing where one was fitted as standard."

Having said that my de-catted Xantia passed last month - but I do go there because they are lenient.

Correct, the rules have changed and if one was fitted as standard, it must be present at MOT time. However the reality is that on an older car that can be difficult to prove. Servicebox doesn't know if my 406 had a cat or not, and lists both exhaust types. How would an MOT tester be able to know one way or another if Peugeot don't? I very much doubt a tester would take it upon himself to argue about it, especially when it isn't a safety issue.

The XMs were the same, I have had six or seven, none had cats and yet some other earlier ones did. If an exhaust system is available for yours without a cat - they didn't all have them.

I can see it now; MoT testers having to look up manufacturer databases to see what the car had when it rolled out of the factory, and then see if the car still has it. How long does a normal MoT take? How long will it take if you allow for the searches? Could be interesting!

The key bit of that statmenet though is 'spark ignition' - ie it only applies to Petrol engines. There is no such requirement for diesels - so you can de-cat a DIESEL without problems, which is what the OP was about.... The situation is a bit murkier when it comes to DPF, removal of which is now a fail, but whether they will go beyond checking there is an appropriate bulge in the pipe I don't know.

it does also state "and all compression ignition vehicles"

altough im sure the new rules like most will relate to vehicles first registered after a certain date
