C5 MAf failures

Unread post by dawsy 22 »

Hi all my 2001 2.2 C5 seems to be destroying maf.s about every 200 miles the first two were lucas ones and the third was labeled as a UK manufactuerd one.The car runs fine for about 200 miles and then looses all power no lights come on the dash and when i use my lexia I cant see anything relating to this.once the MAF is disconnected the car will get me places but in limp mode, has anyone on here had any simular experiences with aftermarket MAFS I bought the first one from my local parts factor and they have replaced each faulty one free of charge Thanks for any help
Thanks Ian

The aftermarket ones don't have a good reputation.
Try and get a VDO one - VDO are a Siemens spinoff and they were the OEM. Siemens no longer manufacture this part themselves.

Petrol or Diesel ?

Seems unlikely that you have had 3 faulty MAF sensors in a row...are you sure that there isn't a split in one of the air hoses downstream of the MAF sensor ? Engines using MAF sensors are VERY sensitive to "un-metered" air, eg air that enters the air intake system downstream of the MAF sensor and is thus not accounted for. On a petrol this will make the engine run really lean under WOT, on a Diesel I would imagine it would cause loss of power too as it would reduce the injector pulse width.

Depending on where the split is it may open and close as the pipe flexes when the engine moves about.

If you have a Lexia have a look at the live sensor data to see how many grams/sec the MAF sensor is indicating at idle and at higher RPM - you should be able to compare that to the figures from another forum member with the same engine - post a screen shot at idle of the live data screen showing the MAF flow (and other figures) and I'm sure someone can advise whether it looks normal or not.

A low MAF reading won't necessarily cause a fault to be logged so looking at the grams/sec figure and seeing a lower than normal figure may be the only clue on the Lexia.

On my C5 2.2L (2002) had MAF failure. Bought one from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/autosensors/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; done over 1000 miles and so far OK. Had esp asr not working anti pollution fault come up and no power, as soon as I changed it got all the power back and faults cleared.

Ive just replaced a MAF on a 2.0 8v hdi C5 Mk.1. Apparently the owner said he has replaced it once before, so its on its third one. Bit the bulliet this time and bought a NEW Dealer one. £143 quid, but all power came back, and engine light out.

It's a fairly delicate piece of kit so easily damaged if you're one of those clowns who drives flat out over road humps and pot holes, or if it's mounted in a way that subjects it to a lot of vibration.

I suppose it's just possible that thr ECU is passing too much current through the sensor.
Wouldn't like to have to troubleshoot that, though!
