2009 c5hdi sudden noise from engine

Post by jldavies137 »

Hi all,
I hope someone can steer me in the right direction,my wife called me tonight to say her 2009 c5 2.0HDi had suddenly developed a terrible rattle and vibration through the clutch/brake pedals, when I got home it sounded like a bag of bolts, very loud rattle/clanking coming from the engine bay,it disappears if the engine is revved, the best way to describe it is a combination of an exhaust that is loose and an engine running on three cylinders ( exhaust is not loose and all four are firing ), could it be the dmf

Sounds like the DMF to me.... That's an ouch job on a 2.0 HDi 16V I'm afraid :?

I always reckon this sort of diagnosis is akin to carrying out brain surgery over the phone line, but - having said that - a DMF failure on a C5 2009 2.0HDi is an all too common failure at just about any mileage. :(

Citroen were replacing these DMFs under warranty under certain conditions a couple of years ago, but you've probably got somewhere between Bob Hope and no hope of them doing so now. :( Been there - done that.

?? Question ??

IF it is the DMF, given the costs of repair and the obvious other items to replace at the time such as water pumps/belts ect, at what value/age do you think a failed DMF is a car killer ?....just in case I would like to be forewarned

I would hope it's not a car killer on a 2009 car! If it were a ropey 2001 model, yes. I'd drive a 2001 until it died the scrap it!

:?: I agree with Northern_Mike in hoping it is not a car killer, she is a 2009 exclusive with 54k on the clock, never missed a beat until now, off to toss a coin now. heads I call citroen (expensive but allegedly know the car ) or tails I call local Unipart centre ( who are cheaper but may not have experience in this problem )

Where abouts are you? A local Citroen specialist (non-dealer) is likely to be cheaper and sometimes they have more idea..

You definitely don't want to go to Citroen, here's the price for the (clutch) parts alone

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
00002052P3 CLUTCH KIT 236.43 GBP 236.43 GBP 283.72 GBP 283.72 GBP 283.72 GBP 283.72 GBP

00000532X7 DUAL FLYWHEEL 309.59 GBP 309.59 GBP 371.51 GBP 371.51 GBP 371.51 GBP 371.51 GBP

 :rofl2:

On top of that you need to add shaft oil seals, gearbox oil, flywheel bolts, plus the labour - you are well into 4 figures. I'd have thought an indi would do it for closer to the price of the Citroen clutch.

My reference above to changing it was in fact referring to a Mk2 C5 - this is a MK3, but it is the same clutch unit, no idea about other things, but I do remember Lighty saying just getting the shafts out was hard

Citroen fixed price repairs for a clutch for a C5 seem to be about £600 all in inc parts, labour and VAT. No mention of the extra cost of the DMF though.

I was recently quoted £1297 (genuine parts), £975 (pattern) for my mk 2 by a dealership, but am getting it done by a local transmission specialist at £585.
Preventative work in my case - the flywheel's getting a bit noisy, as is the release bearing, and I intend keeping the car a while. Even if I had the time and inclination, I wouldn't bother doing it myself, as the parts are a large proportion of that price at retail.
