Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
Hi guys
just bought a Xsara Picasso 1.6hdi diesel model 2007 and I realised it hasn't got a handbook. I am about to change the engine oil but haven't got clue what oil to use.
I went to different car parts and they advised different oils.
I was think to use the Shell Engine Oil (Helix HX7 10w40) performance.
Please, any help would be really welcome.

Re: Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
No, that's not OK. You must use the correct oil, which I believe is a 5w30 fully synthetic low-sulphur oil.
Mods - could we make a sticky with oil info for all the engines? I'm no expert, but this seems to be a recurring question, especially about the 1.6HDi

Re: Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
That's a good suggestion Mike but may be a problem to accurately compile and maintain.
I recommend a look on the Total website as Total and Elf are recommended by Citroen and Renault respectively (Total/Elf are now the same company)
Here's a reasonably accurate guess at the required oil but there are numerous alternatives due to usage and environment so that only someone with more information that that given above can determine the ideal variant.
Quarz Ineo 5W30, which is most likely what the handbook will recommend.

Thanks all for the reply.
I will go for the Total QUARTZ INEO ECS 5W30 5L which should be alright.
Thanks again.

Re: Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
Oddly, the handbook for our C4 Piacsso is a bit vague on oil selection - but I have a suspicion it says NOT to used the Ineo ECS oil in the 1.6 HDi... I'll check later. Note that if your Picasso doesn't have a DPF, then you don't need to worry about going to the expense of a low SAPS / Ash oil. However, using a decent oil, changing it regularly, and removing the turbo feed oil filter will work wonders for the engine's longevity!

Hi Richard,
How do I know if my picasso got a DPF?
Thanks for your reply.

Re: Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
If you post up the last 8 digits of your VIN, somebody who has the relevant access will be able to tell you what your vehicle had when it came out of the factory. Sorry, but it won't be me (I don't have that info).

Re: Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
It should be visible in a little window in the bottom right of the Windscreen - 15 digit number beginning VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].
Easy to check for a DPF - have a look down between the radiator and the exhaust - the Cat (and DPF) if fitted is just there on the front of the engine. If there is a DPF then there will be a stainless pipe screwed into the CAT unit about half way down on the LH side as you look at it. No pipe = no DPF.
Post up the VIN anyway, and I can give you the full list of characteristics recorded by Citroen

Re: Xsara picasso - Engine oil change
Sorry, wrong info on the oil - it says Ineo ECS OK, but not to use Quartz 9000 in a DPF car. Basically says you can use 10W-40 down to 5W30 (0W30 for non DPF) - Grade A3 / B3 / or SL/CF or better. Just use low SAPS if it's DPF.

Hi Richard,
I had a look but still got confused.
Find VIN number bellow, if you could give me a solution for this case, will be really happy.

Hi jacking this thread .....
Ok, going back a fair few years a motor factor i used call 4u2fit now long gone, i was told cars over 15 yr old are best kept with 10w40.
Now i use this in my 03 picasso 2.0hdi no dpf. Seems ok BUT now it seems all over the web 5w30 is recommended , should i go with my gut or the web ?

Different engines 1.6HDI's like to blow up with regular occurrence over oil feed issues to turbo and rest of engine.Huskyxantia wrote: ↑14 Jan 2022, 14:35 Hi jacking this thread .....
