C5 clutch dual mass or single plate?

Post by XantiAl »

Hi to all, Can anyone advise me as to how to determine if a 2004 C5 1997cc hdi has a conventional clutch or dual mass? this vehicle is currently 100 miles away and on offer, clutch slipping.
thanks for your help,
alan

All C5 diesels have DMF.... Question really is, is it an 8V 110 BHP or a 16V 140BHP? If the later be-ware that the the clutch / DMF is expensive, and a real pig to change!

I know that the question has been answered correctly for this car. However all 2.0l 8 valve 110bhp engines in the C5 have a dial mass flywheel. The 90 bhp ones do not have a dual mass flywheel. Some of the early 110s in the 406 or Xantia may not have had a DMF either.

Is there a single mass flywheel conversion which can be fitted instead?

Yes. You'll get conflicting opinions whether it's a good idea or not though. I know 4 people who've done it with no problems as yet. Others will tell you that as the engine is not designed for a solid flywheel that it will shake itself to bits and/or snap the crank... seeing as the 110HDi was in plenty of cars without one, I believe it'll be ok and I've never actually heard of it destroying one!

It wouldn't be a proper forum if everyone agreed ;)

Someone on here enquired about the cost of a replacement solid flywheel and found it was more expensive.

That would be me. Dual mass came in at under £300, solid conversion was £350+, both LUK.

But if your solid conversion lasts 2 or 3 times as long as the Dual Mass....

Original dual mass lasted 116k and 11 years, don't think thats too bad. I can't see me still having the car in 11 years time. :P

Hi Guy's
I have a 2009 c5 that had a slipping clutch at 84k and I had the DMF replace with a solid flywheel and new clutch. Now the down side to this IS a little bit of vibration ( to tell you the truth after a week or so you don"t notice it )what you will notice is how quick the car picks up now that it does not have that bloody heavy flywheel to turn.
I would go for the solid kit again if it was me
