Twingo 1 brake shoes - changing - any tips?

Unread post by harvestmouse »

My other car is a Twingo.... well it's the girlfriend's now, but guess who is still doing all the maintenance on it.

The rear brakes need sorting. They work fine, but the MOT bloke said that they would need doing soon and that was at least 3,000 miles ago, so I really should get onto it.

My question is: Is there anything awkward about them? I have changed brake shoes before, and would only dismantle one side at a time, but just wondered if there was, what with the car being French, anything odd, unusual or difficult.

It's a standard 1994/95 (M-reg, don't know where the log book is right now) 1.2 litre model.

Many thanks in advance.

I have not worked on one. I would not expect many surprises except wear and stuff seized up.
The adjuststers will most probably need looked at. You don't know what you need till opened up. I would check price and availability of bits if it need done quickish.
If there's a Woman involved it will need done yesterday!

Do you think that they'll be like the brakes on a Clio of the same era? I've got a Haynes for a Clio. Fair enough, they leave a lot of stuff out, but it's better than nothing.

Will have a look this afternoon. Have got brake cleaner, shoes, new plasticised hub nuts 30mm socket etc.

Sounds good.
Your other checks would be weepy brake cylinders or badly scored drums

All sorted. It wasn't complicated after all, but thought that it would be prudent to ask, just in case.

I hope that I can pass on some of my own limited knowledge one day, although, in terms of French cars, it is limited to those with 602cc engines.
