Why is the V6 C5 so slow?

Post by Quackers »

Just looking at Parkers..

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/f ... back-2004/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The 2.0i 16V VTR can do 0-60Mph in 8.8 seconds.

Yet the 3.0 V6 Exclusive is only .5 of a second quicker.

I know they are big heavy cars, but the 3.0 V6 just seems so slow on paper. The Ford Mondeo which is the same class is 7.6 seconds 0-60 which seems closer to what i would expect.

Can somebody explain it to me? I just don't get why it seems so poor.

I really want the newer C5 with the 3.0 V6 HDI 240BHP engine as my next car but they seem very rare :(

The 2 litre will be a manual, the 3 litre is an auto.

Compare the V6 auto Xantia with the V6 Manual (LHD Activa only) Xantia - the manual is something like a second and a half faster on paper. Auto really kills the 0-60 time.

Never thought the auto box would make such a difference, when i was car looking with my mate last year at BMW M3's the 0-60 time was identical on the autos and manuals. Guessing you can get better auto boxes now?

I think once rolling, say from 30-80 or 90mph is where the power of the V6 auto Xantia really tells over the 2.0 16v or even the Activa.

The 0-60 times quoted for a manual car tend to be obtained in a way that the average driver would never achieve - max revs, drop clutch, racing changes etc. whereas the automatic 0-60 time can be achieved by anyone by just flooring the throttle so tend to be more realistic.

Also be aware , that if the timings are similar to the 2.7 C6 it might take into account the turbo lag, something the C6 does suffer from, if you "boot it"

Only the 2.7 is laggy, the 3.0 isnt as bad and is more akin to lazy petrol engines :)

The M3 also likely has a DSG/SMG gearbox. these shift a hell of a lot quicker as they are automatically thinking ahead and will have the next gear ready to go. Quite fancy tech that does away with a manual clutch.

Also take into account the torque of each engine. Are you meaning petrol vs petrol or diesel vs petrol as diesel will suffer off the line but once rolling can start clawing back when kept in the power band.
