When it rains, it pours!!! (Diesel Leak S1 Xantia)

Post by Rhothgar »

Just when you thought it was safe.

Another problem.

S1 has been becoming difficult to start and within 2 days almost impossible without priming.

"Air Leak!", I hear you all shout simultaneously.

WRONG!

I've carefully investigated this and where the primer bulb is, there are two pipes that rise up from the bulkhead. One is clipped to the turbo pipe with a 19 clip as attached photo and the other goes into the back of the primer bulb.

The service citroen piccy is wrong so I have edited it and attached below.

It notes the part as

FUEL FEED PIPE
DIAM 7X17-7X19

Does this mean 7mm. int diameter and 17mm. ext diamter?

Edited Image: Arrow shows position of no. 19 on turbo pipe AND leak
Image

Where the pipe from the diesel pump return drops down and clips into the no. 19 clip, there is a split. Wondered why I was only getting 35 mog instead of 45mpg and now it's clear.

Has anyone any experience of repairing this pipe? Just wondering what internal diameter the hose is as I am thinking of inserting brake pipe and using fuel clips.

When it is unclipped and the primer pumped it really squirts out the diesel so I am hoping this will last until Saturday given the other issue with the S2.

If anyone has done this, do they have any tips because it looks nice and easy to get to.... NOT!

Its a common pipe to split, its thick walled, and gets brittle with age. Ive repaired by simply pushing in COPPER house hold radiator heating feed pipe! Its about the right size. Its not under pressure, and so a nice tight push fit should surfice.

Sorry ROger, I cannot remember the exact size, 8mm to 10mm But cannot be sure!

Good to know Paul.

Cheers.

Standard household copper is 1/2" so it can't be that big. Maybe brake pipe size I guess.

See if anyone else turns something up.

Paul means the 9 or 10 mm microbore copper Roger.

Cheers Steve. It's 8mm from memory if I'm pedantic. What's brake pipe? 6mm?

All cured.

Took the S1 for a run to Chester yesterday. Brimmed it on Saturday and brimmed it again on arrival back in Nottingham.

52.8mpg and that involved about 15 miles of urban driving too. RESULT!!
