I'm hoping to re-start work on the 'Green Lady' this coming week-end, starting with finishing re-assembling the bottom end. I'm going to have to buy a few extra specialist tools as Jim, my friendly mechanic, has moved to a new job so I won't be able to borrow from him what I haven't got.
First item is a Torque Angle Gauge; when tightening the head, I found Jim's less than ideal as there's nothing on the end of the rather short torque reaction arm to hold it still. This seems to be a short-coming of the usual design - can anyone recommend from personal experience a model suitable for working on an XUD9 that doesn't cost more than about £40?

Re: Torque Angle Gauge
I have one probably the same as yours old guy, I've managed on with it for years but often wondered if I should find something better, maybe this would do but I've only seen it in pictures:

Re: Torque Angle Gauge
That's the one I've got Malcolm but as old guy said it's a bit of a juggle to use if you're on your own.

Re: Torque Angle Gauge
I like Addo's suggestion, but my mate doesn't like getting her hands oily and has a low boredom threshold!
The problem I had last time was the head bolts - there's b-all to which the reference arm can be secured, (the cam cover is all smooth curves in alloy!) and the bolts have to be torqued to 60NM then rotated 220°(IIRC). That's VERY tight and calls for a really BIG (36") breaker bar to apply more torque than I'd like to put through a ratchet. Last time I torqued the head bolts down as specified in sequence and then in two steps of 110° (not ideal as this doubles the error) in sequence.
I've also now got to do the big-end bolts, 20NM then 70°, not too much grunt, but working overhead.
I think I'm going to buy a Laser 2245 which looks to have a nice big dial (marked in 2° increments and numbered every 10°) and a nice long reaction arm. I'm going to look out for some really strong small magnets to hold the arm (to a socket on another bolt?).

Re: Torque Angle Gauge
Today, I found that I couldn't actually buy what I wanted off the shelf (web order only - take about a week) and had to settle for a cheap alternative - like the one I've used in the past and found less than satisfactory. Before I get to the point of doing the head bolts, I'm going to try to devise a way to hold the reaction arm to the head.

Re: Torque Angle Gauge
I used one of these things once. Arrgh! why bother.I ended up working out the degrees, and where the socket should end up, when bolt has turned the required amount. It"s also usually possible to pull (never push BTW) the knuckle bar round in one go, which is preferable. Once you"ve done the 1st couple, you"ll rocket through the rest and wonder what all the fuss is about. So basically, work out where your bar end should finish up and Pu-ull it round in one go. These tools (and many others) these days are very flimsy and you end up worrying about it moving/slipping etc. and if it does you then can"t continue, cos invariably can"t reliably remember where bolt started, so end up resetting and sarting again. Boring, and if you"re as old as me you can do without the stress.
Re: Torque Angle Gauge
im just re/assembling a head on an L reg 2.1 N/A D Rihno Trafic,
what a torque sequence!!!!!
there are 17 head fixings
of which there are
2 extra long bolts ( one at opposite ends of the head )
4 hex headed
8 torx
3 studs with cap nuts on top
each type of fixing has a different torque/angel setting, but you still use the ever increasing circle from the center pair of fixings
i think there is 19 sequence's in all
might be there alllllllll day me thinks
