only asking as driving back from forest of dean yesterday in very heavy rain

They are not difficult but I haven't done them for so long now I have forgotten, you do have to wind the calipers back, you can get a tool for not to much money but I have always managed to improvise. I always get my pads from Ebay, they are the cheapest and I have never had a dud set yet.

Note that the C5 calipers wind back in opposite directions (I can never remember which is which), and use a drop of Loctite on the bolts - they can work loose otherwise.
Check too that you buy the correct sized pads, as there are three sizes over the model range.

Bear in mind i am a novice
Wonder if any one knows of a guide knocking about and i assume theres a sensor on the pads that i have to connect

Hi, have you done brake pads before? how much of a novice are you? Should you be messing with the brakes?

Did my vectra last year and i hated it.

Being lazy going in gargae monday 50 quid for new pads and to fit them.
Would have cost me 30 quid for teh things anyway and for the time and hassle (And i dont have a drive and live on a main road)
