Re: starter motor question
I would say its no good as the pinion is about a 1/3 larger in diameter.

Re: starter motor question
Surely it's not possible to have a different amount of teeth , at the same pitch, on the same size cog? I'm not a mechanic, I'm an ex engineer, but to get more teeth with the same depth and pitch, the cog would have to have a bigger O.D., therefore the centre would be further away from the flywheel ring gear. Is this possible without the motor bolt holes being slotted?

Re: starter motor question
if you send me the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No. i will get you the OE part No.,
which you can then either aim it at your factors or do a goooogly search with it

Re: starter motor question
Hmmm
I think you'd be better going to an auto electrician, with your old starter in your hand.
He/she will be able to source a suitable replacement, almost certainly cheaper than the parts place.
They'll also be able to change the pinion for one that's right for your engine, in the unlikely event that the replacement has the wrong one.
It's just possible that the auto accessory shop has a motor from a different manufacturer, with a different reduction gear arrangement, which could possibly have a different no of teeth. This is only possible if the starter in question has a nose bearing that's part of the mounting bracket. If it's part of the bell housing, you need the same size pinion as the motor shaft position has to line up with the bearing and a larger pinion will clash with the flywheel.
Get the auto-sparks to do it. They're dealing with this kind of thing day in, day out and they'll take the guess work out of it and probably save you a few bob...

Give West Lancs Auto Electrics a call, i've used them for any starter motors i've ever needed. They supply recon starters that look like new at fantastic prices. (and no i'm not affiliated to them in any way, i'm just a satisfied customer)
