Bosch fuel pump static timing
I've put the the fuel pump back on my TD and would like to check that the static timing. I'm sure there must be something simple I've overlooked but I can't work out how to do it. I seem to remember on the Lucas EPIC, there was a hole to stick a thin piece of metal through.

Ah, so a gauge in needed for the Bosch pumps?

If you have got the Key Way correctly in the Cam sprocket for the Pump Kev, theres the useual TWO 13mm Bolt holes that hold the sprocket in place.
Then set the pump so the E Longated slots that the 13mm nuts that hold the pump to the back plate, I set the bolts to the CENTRE of the elongated slots are in the middle, IE A bit of slot to both side of the 13mm nut.
The car should and if everything else set up correctly start and run well enough!
However, theres nothing wrong with useing a Dail Guage to set the Timing SPOT ON!

I wouldn't worry too much about it, a dial gauge is the "proper" method but I don't think anyone bothers. Ears are the next best thing, the engine shouldn't be too quiet and not too naily, somewhere in between. Last one I did was about 2 thirds of the way back on the bracket, but as I'm running veg then a touch of advance is probably better. I don't bother refitting the lower 13mm nut, on the 406 it requires removing the power steering pump to get at, so it makes adjustments very difficult. No problems leaving it off.
