Xantia diagnosis

Post by xantiagreen »

2001 Xantia hatchback 110 Hdi 111k

Drove to Savoy citroen specialist in hapton burnley and had it on the lexia 3 diagnostics, Malcolm the owner was superb, he mentioned whoever had it on diagnostics did not clear them as it came up with loads of faults after clearing them and starting again it found two faults front side airbags and abs. Also he mentioned the turbo could be on its way out when he pressed accelerator he heard a whooshing sound and he also said there was quite alot of vibration from the alternator or and the pump just above. He used a long screwdriver and placed the tip on alternator and then the pump just above and could feel and hear i suspect alot of vibration he gave me the screwdriver and i could feel the vibration on the top of the handle.
I'm no expert so i dont know whether that is a way of checking he advised to be certain he,would have to take of the belt and inspect the pulleys and take from there, the side airbags he advised to check the loom under each seat, and re solder the connection without the clips and the abs he advised possible reluctor rings on front driveshafts or abs sensors need cleaning . Top man he charged £30 and spent a good hour on her. He gave bags of advice and offered his expertise over the phone i had any problems.

Now its back to getting the side airbags and abs light fixed, he was very busy and could not do anything till week after maybe,so I'm gonna try the soldering myself and take it to cit specialist in my home town for abs. Still getting 33-35 round town, xantia handbook quotes 38mpg round town, but some owners quote 40-43 round town.

Also for the volumetric alarm sensors he advised to spray hair spray on them and that will stop them from setting off, height corrector cradle also needed the tracking needs to be re checked and steering wheel placed on correct spline if tracking and lower arm bushes are good.

Too much to do and not enough money, this xantia will survive..

Its hardly run in mine was past 111k when I bought it, currently showing nearly 303k and still running fine. Had to do the wire soldering job on the Xsara to get rid of the airbag warning light, fiddling with the connectors under seat the worked for a while but it the fault came back again eventually, got round to removing the connectors and just soldering the wires together finally.

Volumetric sensors can be a pain mine are very random, not heard of using hairspray on them, I just deactivate them with the dashboard switch when I get out. Somewhere there is info on a fix using parts from Maplins that cost a few quid. Its on my to do list but then so are a few other things.

A late model 110 HDi is worth preserving if you ask me, they are about as good as it gets. Comfortable, economical and not too silly in the computer/ECU department.

I must say your mpg seems a bit low but then it is very much down to where and how you drive it. Short town journeys will take its toll on any car but I would have expected upper 30s and 50+ on a run.

Keep the faith and I'm sure you will be rewarded.

As much as I like Malc Savoy VERY much I do find it hard to think of a HDi 110 Turbo "On its way out" at 111k.

Mines on 272k ALL original and has no noises. Unless yours NEVER had an oil change in its early life. A wooshing may not be a turbo failing, but simply A split intercooler pipe - the common area for a split is under the one that just connects to the metal part of the inlet..

Seen here on mine, the blue tape was from an earlyer attempt to tape it up, but then I decided to cut it just after the split and then push it back on. Its still like it now 3 months later..
Image

Thats what Id check first, the other is the small rubber interconnecting pipe at the back of the engine, get the car UP on ramps safely, and then Lie under the car, follow the plastic intercooler pipe and where it goes up the back of the car to the turbo outlet theres a small inter connecting pipe. Check it too..

Thanks for the advice Ctroenxm, Hell razor5543 and rory_perrett. The problem has been pin pointed to either the alternator or the pulleys/rollers (Not sure if that's the right term) mechanic will pull apart and investigate next Friday, so hopefully that's another problem solved.
Need to either change Rear the height corrector/control arm/bracket as mechanic has made an improvement but it's not changing height as it should. Mechanic can't find and seized areas, had Rear H/C cleaned and new seal kit fitted so can't understand what's causing it not to work properly.

The two levers on the bracket much be COMPLETE Free moving with no stickyness..

The other question, if the height corrector been removed from the car?? If so, has the lever that the plastic "Dog BOne" clip is on been put back in the exact correct place in relation to the height corrector arm??

Its essential its in the correct place to work!

All's well with the suspension now, mechanic had a fiddle with it last week and it works a dream now will post pics of it at normal ride height and few seconds after engines off, you can give me a rough idea of whether it's at the right level.

Cheers CitXm (is it worth getting new chrome strips for the whole car?)
