Citroen C5 Tailgate lock and various electrical faults

Post by michael maurice »

I have a 52 plate Citroen C5 estate.

Recently I have had two rather odd problems.

The first is that when I close the boot, the system registers as boot lid open, consequently I cant lock the car.

The second started happening recently then stopped and that is after I park the car and switch the engine off, both front winds open a small amount, then close. This can happen a few times. When I start the car, I can close the windows by the buttons and they will stay closed unless I open either of them.

I'm more concerned about the boot lid problem

Thank you

Michael

Could be the first signs of a failing battery. Try doing a BSI reset to see if that makes any difference.

Ideally needs to be in a garage and if the battery is at all suspect this should be charged overnight. A defective or discharged battery can cause a lot of headaches and may result it more problems after performing this procedure.

Drop the suspension to low (to prevent the pump running when you refit the battery).
Open the driver's window and remove the keys, close any doors.
Wait at least ten minutes, ideally half an hour.

Unclip the battery leads.
Short them together through a resistance - a festoon bulb is ideal - for a minute or so.
Short the battery leads together for a minute.

Wait at least half an hour.

Replace the battery and clip the leads on. Do not open the door or otherwise disturb the car.
Wait at least ten minutes.
Reach in through the window and put the sidelights on. Wait a few minutes, five to ten ideal.
Reach in and turn the ignition on but do not start the engine.
Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.
Remove key open & close door test central locking system.
Wait five minutes.
Start the engine and let it idle for five minutes.
Open the door, get in and operate the suspension buttons.

If all is well then you will need to retune the radio, reset the time and date, reset autolights and reset window controls.

Both the boot lid fault and the windows fault are intermittent. I dont think there's a problem with the battery, its a high capacity Bosch and its no older than 3 years old maybe even 2 years old.

I think the problem lies with the switch that detects that the boot lid is closed but I dont know what that is.

The battery might not be failing, but it is not unheard of for a C5 to develop an electrical glitch. Doing the BSI reset could well clear the glitches ( a bit like when Windows plays up, and a re-start resolves it).

You got the words the wrong way round James. It should read "it is unheard of for the C5 not to develop an electrical glitch"...

I have done the reset as advised by Stempy and at first I thought it had worked, but it hasn't.

I still get a messagae saying 'boot lid open' and cant lock the car.

I think it is to do with the mechanism or switch which is activated upon closing the boot, but I dont know where it is or how to get at it.

Can anyone advise me on this, the fault is very intermittent but it means I cant lock the car.

Is there a switch inside the tailgate locking mechanism that can go wrong?

Or is it a wiring loom fault?

I have the boot lock problem on my estate and it seems to be because the glass doesn't fit properly, if I wiggle the wiper about the glass moves and the tailgate open display disappears and it locks.
