Orange light with Car skidding.

Post by xantiagreen »

2001 Xantia Hatch 110 HDi

I thought I'd clear the lungs of this beast as it's only used round town and hardly goes above 40mph. So I belted it through each gear and reached triple figures in fourth, as I approached the roundabout I pressed hard on the brakes and everything worked as it should and went round with the front tyres squealing, then the orange light with the car above and lines underneath appeared. What have I done, I was taking the car Monday morning to citroen specialist and I think I have added another problem. Can I unplug something and see if it works, where would that certain plug be...

What would it cost to get this problem corrected, I have rear height problem, cold start problem, bad earth problem, Volumetric alarm problem mpg problem and more.

How much would you spend on repairs on a xantia hdi with 110k miles

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the Xantia, but on the C5 X7, it means ESP or ASR is operating. . It's a skid control thing. I think it means the car is correcting oversteer or maybe understeer. On the C5 the car with two squiggley lines underneath flashes on and off.

That light means that (for whatever reason) the ABS system has failed. There can be a few reasons for this, but (based on what you have said) it is most likely one (or more) of the reluctor rings has let go. There is one ring per wheel. I would check the ones on the front, on the drive shafts. If they are cracked, it means that they can spin freely on the drive shaft, and produce an (apparent) speed imbalance. This will confuse the ABS, and it will (after a few seconds of decision making) take itself off line.

Replacing the rings is not a difficult process, just time consuming (and needs the right tools). CitroJim (and I, assisting) replaced both the front ones on Gracie and it only took a couple of hours. On the journey home I took Gracie over a speed known to cause the ABS a problem, and there was no reaction. The ABS has not played up since.

The rear rings are part of the hub. If these rings need to be replaced then you will have to replace the hubs themselves.

not sure on the light but maybe ABS?? but on the repairs, it muchly depends how much its worth to you,
going via Citroen is probably going to be quite costly as being a dealer id have thought the hourly rate would be 60+
if your relatively handy with the spanners then there's no reason you couldn't sort most of it your self, especially the earthing, i did it on my BX when it was on the road, located and Cleaned up All the earthing points and put a better earth cable in from battery to gearbox, also spent a while pulling the multi plugs out, cleaning them up with a small wire brush then a smear of vasalene before Cabletieing them up, didn't take too long, but was time well spent imo! earthing could also help with the cold starting??

the guys on here are absolutely Top notch with help and advise, pretty much all aspects of maintaining these case!

My C5 did the same when I blasted out the cobwebs. I parked it up overnight as usual and found it had reset itself by morning. French electrics are a bit fussy

Mine did the same and put up "brake fault - Stop" or similar on the centre panel. As per Bandit12's experience, it reset itself the day after and was fine ever since..

It is the reluctor ring, on front poss driver side. I recall hearing low pitch rumbling noise now and again last year on slow braking and would lose grip on slow braking for a second or so. Not had the problem since but lexia says change. Will clean all brake sensors as well or replace if knackered.

Thanks for all the info
