Would any of you mechanics...

Post by Northern_Mike »

Please take a look at my Berlingo?

Undiagnosable knock from left front area. Been to local (reputable) specialist twice for investigation. They can't find anything. They can hear the noise and have party stripped it. No fault found. No charge. MOT man couldn't find it. Sounds pretty bad. Drives ok. Knocks when turning right. Just one knock.

Driving me potty. Don't want it breaking when the missus is driving it.

Help!

Strut support bearing possibly seized?
When turning it causes the spring to wind up and then release causing odd noises. I have recently replaced these on my son's elderly Peugeot 306 - both flimsy bearings were rusted up almost solid.

It sounded similar to a problem I had on my previous Xsara, until the very last sentence that it is just one knock ... I had replaced the wheel driveshaft ... but, it was making continuous noise while the wheel was turned to the max in one direction, in proper intervals (approx 1 knock per wheel turn) ...

The Wifes Saxo was making a clonk/knock from the offside, first time after moving steering wheel, after being parked for any time, couldn't find any fault. Failed mot on split lower balljoint rubber, having replaced, noise has disappeared.

Does it knock every time you turn the steering, or just the first time of the day? Does it do it at the same location every time, or is random. Does it do it if you turn the wheel stationary, or only when it's rolling? Does it do it if you disconnect the drop link? I'd have a look, but you'd have to point it 400 miles north :rofl2:

so what/how far did the local specialist strip/disassemble it, and what items did they inspect,

i agree with the above could be strut top bearing, otherwise it could be a susp arm bush

Knocks every time after about 1/4 turn of right lock. Speed not a factor.

Has a had a new bottom arm with bushes, new strut, new top mount back in July fitted by the same people who took it in on Monday. It's had the arm and bushes checked, arb mountings checked and tightned and everything else levered and checked. . But it doesn't make any noise stationary.

I have not tried it with the drop link disconnected as I currently need a boat rather than a car.
