C5 - How much Eolys Fluid Should I Use ?

Post by hamster99 »

I'm getting the "fluid level low" warning on my C5 and wondered how much fluid I will need to put in.

Does anyone know how long 1 litre would last in miles?

I've done 215k now and I wouldn't want to stick 3 or 4 litres in (at £30/litre) if that would last 80,000 miles as I suspect the car will have expired (or become too expensive to repair) long before I get to 300k miles.

It shouldn't really use any unless you have a leak somewhere although if this is the first time its been topped up you probably don't have to much to worry about. Fill it nearly to the top, I doubt that it will take much more than a litre.

It's always going to use a bit Peter - that's what it's there for (this is the DPF fluid)! There are various systems depending on the age of the car - later ones use a bag that you just change out (although I believe you can refill them). Our C4 Picasso has used only about 40% of the installed capacity in 70k miles, so although service schedule says refill at 75k, I doubt it is going to need it for a lot longer than that. Post up the last 8 digits of the VIN and we can check on service.citroen as to which type it uses.

Eolys capacity is 4.5 litres, i put 2 in mine reasoning the same as you "why waste £100+ if the car doesn't last another 80k miles". I've since found out my pump doesn't work so i wasted the £60 putting it in the undercar tank! I think a pipette in the fuel tank every time i refill is in order.

Hadn't thought about the pump not working. I've never been able to hear it before (unlike my wife's C3 which seems to be overly noisy) I seem to remember there was the option to run the pump within the lexia system so I will plug the laptop in tomorrow and see what happens before I buy any Eoyls.

2.0 HDi 16V appears you can only buy a new reservoir at >£200 from Citroen....no idea if you can refill it!!

Well spent a bit of time under the car today.

The eoyls reservoir is on the passenger side just in front of the rear axle. It has one of those aluminium shields around it which have 4 fixings which are plastic philips screws with plastic plugs. Undo the screws and the fixings pop out easily. Once you remove the shield you can see the tank, which is a semi clear plastic so you can actually see how much is left in it.

Mine seemed about half full so I only topped it up with a 1 litre bottle. I did this through the connection towards the rear of the car. This is one of those push fit types (10mm) the same as the ones used on the fuel line between the fuel filter and the fuel pump in the engine compartment. It was easy to disconnect (just push the two white "buttons" on each side) and no spillage as with the rear of the car on axle stands all the fluid run to the front end of the resorvoir.

Getting a pipe to fit the connector was a bit of a faff but I cannabilised the fuel connector from my "dead" VTR and it worked fine. Remember to block off the pipe you removed as otherwise you will get some fluid coming out when you fill the reservoir.

Job done. All I need to do now is fire up the lexia and tell the computer the eoyls is topped up.
