engine id ???

Post by wotwot »

Well its time to do the head gasket on my trusty stead (1998 dispatch van)
Firstly the glow plugs went down one by one and then the head gasket decides to give up.
Decided to get another engine to put straight in so I'm not without the van, the engine out of the van with only 100,000 on the clock is worth skimming decoking and putting back together when time permits.
New engine with only 55,000 on the clock is from a peugeot 405, will be changing cambelt pulleys and water pump before it goes in.
Only difference is lucas epic on new engine bosch on engine coming out.
is the cambelt the same for both pumps as not been asked which pump I have when buying cambelt pulley kit etc.
is there a set of numbers on it to identify the engine as an xud engine.
Is the gearbox the same as the van or are the drive shafts/ gearing all wrong.
All advice greatly recieved except "why the hell are you doing it in this weather"LOL.
Wish I could leave it till the weather breaks but need the van for early starts.

Thanks citronut for the reply, but the current engine in the van is from a ZX and the new engine from the 405 was out of a car written off a few years ago.
Which is why I asked about numbers on the actual engine.

I think you missed citronut's point as he mentioned that:
citronut wrote:... possibly the same from the pug 406 ...
and possibly same engine code/type from ZX :)

So he can tell you the original engine code of your car from your car's VIN number.

PS: As a general information, the generic codes of PSA engines from wiki,

Vert
looks like the prob here is neither engine originally came from the vehicle stated in the OP's opening post

although it sounds like they are both XUD of on code or another :-D

also i dont remember ever being asked which fuel pump an XUD engine has when inquiring on a cam belt kit,

the only differences could be the tensioners

Yes your right engine thats in at the moment comes from a zx, the engine thats going in is from a 405.
got van in 2011 with a dead engine.
And tensioners do seem to vary a little but the relevant holes seem to be in the blocks of the xud engines.
I assume the pumps have the same tooth set up is why theres no difference in the belts.

An XUD engine belt was ALL THE SAME, be it Bosch, Lucas Epic or what ever.

BUT, the DW8 (N/a 1.9 D ) engine IS a Different belt. They still use a roatry pump, so as long as both engines are XUD there be no issue.

Swapping the Bosch onto the replacment engine?

thanks citroenxm thats what I thought, and was wondering about engine id like codes or numbers on the block to identify it as turbo/year etc.
And also about the gear box

not sure yet may just get the engine sorted when its out and fit a new seal kit to the bosch pump so I can run it veggie whenI put it back in.
If this engine runs well may possibly do the swap.

The original xud engines were identified by a number on a little plate on the front of the block just below the joint between head and block over towards the gearbox end. It was possibly just behind the oil filler / dipstick and could be viewed from above as it was at an angle. This is from memory so I hope I'm not putting you wrong. 161 meant xud8 which was the 1769cc version. 162 was on the xud9 which was the 1905cc version. Later engines still had this designation plate but I don't know what was on them. I'm sure Mr Google will help. As far as I know there was never a turbo version of the DW8.

Many thanks for that BX seen the little plate but never took notice of it.
Thought it may have had stamped in numbers.
I'll check the plates out when I get the engine out this weekend.

Well the new engine is back in and turns over but looks like the pump could be knackered.
checked out the solenoid which is functioning fine with a 12v supply to it, but when cranked no fuel at the injectors.
Although the engine had been sitting for a few years the previous owner had filled everything with an oil !! to keep any moisture out.
Looks like I will have to put the bosch pump pipes and injectors from the other engine.

Usually you only have to change the pump and pipes. The Bosch pump should work with the Lucas injectors. The pump outlets are in different positions on the different pumps and that is why the pipes need to be changed with the pump.
