Xantia mk2 central locking

Post by kilianmanning »

Hi guys..

Purchased a new mk2 xantia, thinking of driving it & not breaking it if I can fix a few problems! :-) Abs light is constantly on..
And the central locking doesn't work.
I think some of the door locks are seized. When I lock the doors the central locking automatically unlocks all again.
Anybody have any ideas on the problems? :-)

Check this thread ---> Tips: Xantia ABS sensor and then start by measuring the resistances from the ABS socket to find the broken sensor, as described in the thread.

Usually front door locks can cause this. Try to clean them first and after that use some lock oil. Apply both from key holes and to the catch parts. Dirty mechanism can cause this and especially when the weather gets colder locking mechanism might become tricky.

If it does not help, get in the car and lock from buttons manually and then open by remote control. See which button doesn't work.

Then of course finally there is the possibility of a broken wire in the front door outlet.

It is likely to be a front ABS sensor that has failed. When you find it, make sure to get a good quality sensor. I had one go on Gracie got a sensor for about £10, got through the MoT, and the sensor failed 6 months later. I paid about £30 for another, and it has lasted over a year so far.

WHY is it likely to be a front sensor? Theres four, and they are all as much as a risk for failiure as each other!

As for door lock, the two reasons above are good points. Rather though then Siezed Mechanisems, Id be more inclined to think a dry connection at the plug on either one of the front doors..

Remove the door card, and take the plug off the door lock, spray some contact cleaner in the plug and socket and re-connect it.

Other wise a broken wire between the drivers door and A pillar, a common thing!

RARELY do the actual door locks themselfs fail, they are a rather reliable thing..

Thanks guys..

I will check all of the abs sensors.
The light went off earlier for a while when driving & the abs worked when I jammed on the brakes. Light is back on now though.
I was at the central locking earlier & there is power going to all of the doors, the locks aren't opening & closing very well though, the drivers door doesn't lock at all.
It seems like the locks are seized, do I need to take off the door cards to free them up?

Someone has removed a fuse then to prevent the lock bounce problem being caused else where.

by stiff do you mean key in the lock barrel or when in the car with the door shut stiff to press the button down?

Ok a fuse for the central locking?

By stiff I mean hard to press the button down.

Ok, got resistance readings from the abs sensors.

Rear right 1060 ohms
Rear left 1604 ohms
Front right 1145 ohms
Front left 1097 ohms

Was that readings from the abs block connector on the side of the abs block?

I'd be inclined to think it's a bad connection at the plugs of the sensors .. the 1060ohm is the correct resistance reading.

Plug connections are on top of the sub frame above roughly each rear strut area.. and fronts follow the cables down the back of The front subframe for the front ones. Measure them again at the sensor plug..

If they are still high then replacement. But usually it's dead or correct for resistance that's why I'm thinking connecting plugs.

Ok thanks a million I will check all after. The readings were from the connector to the abs ecu. Do you have any idea about the central locking?

Rear left 1604 ohms would be the conflicting value, causing the ABS light.

In my Xantia II '98 I had to change only one abs sensor and it was the rear left :?
This might be just a coincidence but all other 3 were still originals when I sold the car.
Two tips:
1. I used grinder to remove/cut the sensor.
2. The sensor wire/cable routing is tricky, try to see before removing the old one :)
