got a ph1 306 got some thoughts..

Post by taffy »

i have a tmic lucas 1.9 and been looking into the way it works(which isnt the greatest idea...
however iwant to temp gauge the charge temp and see how good i can get it...but wana keep it standard for now(no scoop)
i was thinking along the lines of some cold air feeds to the ic but bout inch pipe so its under pressure..and possibly fans on a switch for traffic purposes
has anyone tried this before? i was also thinking of using the metal fins they put in electric(12v)camping food hampers(orsomething simular)as when air is blown over them it creates a temp drop of a good few degrees
thanks in advance
taffy

also your veiws on a bov recerculate to look after the turbo

Just a cold air feed should do it Taffy. I'm not convinced by the merits of FMICs on diesels unless running ridiculous amounts of boost and fuelling. Even on my Saab 900 T16 it didn't make that much difference.

Don't put anything in the airflow. It just disturbs it. Not what you want.

No need for a BOV on a diesel. There's no throttle to create turbine stall..

What turbo do you have, and what sort of power are you going for? FMIC is not always required, and will add a bit of lag, so best avoided if you don't need it. I'd be look at a Bosch conversion before that, easier and better results.

It's bloody freezing outside, you're not going to get the air much colder. Anyway, from past experience you need a massive amount of water sprayed at the IC to make it cooler. It's all a load of cack unless running massive, massive power, and having a huge spray. Plus.... your water, unless you have it cooled, is going to be around ambient temp anyway. No use if it's been sat under your bonnet getting hot in the sun.

Bosch pump, higher boost, and a good twist of the screw would be the simplest. I believe there's some on here have done that to Xantia with very good results around 120BHP and not much hassle.

If it's a T2 or K14 then that's good, those are the 2 more capable turbos fitted to the XUD. I know from experience that turning the wastegate in about 2.5 turns on the K14 will result in about 20psi, depending on fuelling of course.

There are various opinions on the internet on what you can run on a TMIC, but loads run 20psi or more on a standard TMIC seemingly without issue. Personally I wouldn't bother with the complication of an IC spray at that pressure. Give it a rinse through with petrol and a hose through the fins, that should at least improve efficiency. Watch the D seal between the intercooler and manifold, these can fail on standard engines never mind with extra boost.

Standard airbox will be fine.

You will be fiddling a lot with the fuelling to get it right, the Lucas looks like a pain in the arse. I'd really consider spending the time saved not fitting an IC spray swapping it out for a Bosch :) On the Bosch you can make quick easy adjustments at the roadside when out for a test run, this will save a lot of effort. Not to mention you can run on veg with a Bosch :)

Yes, you need lines and injectors. You can pin the pump pulley so you don't need to disturb the cam belt. Remember to move the studs on the pump mounting bracket, the Bosch is orientated differently to the Lucas. I don't bother refitting the nut under the pump, it's in a very awkward place (on my 406 the aux belt and power steering pump have to come off for access). The pump secures just fine with the other 3. If you have to adjust the pump timing it's lot easier without having to get to the lower nut.

I agree with most of what you're saying, except that you will need to remove the cam belt as the Lucas sprocket will not fit a Bosch pump.
Don't forget that the pump timing will need to be set after fitting.

I've done a couple of Lucas to Bosch conversions now so if you go for it give me a shout if you have any problems.

One other thing, always replace the shaft seal before fitting the pump, they're only around £5 and tend to go if the pumps old (and they will be by now) or not been used for a while.
