Xantia gear lever/linkage/selectors

Post by sparksie »

Hi guys
Isn't it typical?
I've been driving the Cit all week without a hit h.
Loaned it to a client this morning and he got brought home by the AA!
He claimed it was very down on power, kept cutting out and wasn't drivable.
I'm away until tomorrow, so haven't had a chance to look at it, but the recovery guy said he couldn't find first or second gears and the car reeks of overheated clutch, so he used the spec lift to recover it.
I'm hoping all that's happened is the gear lever bottom bushing has failed.
I have a set of these for a Pug 206. Anybody know if it's likely to be the same?
Cheers

ok
Backed it over the pit this afternoon and found the gear lever bushing is almost new.
Spent a little over an hour trying to figure out where all the play was coming from.
Eventually spotted it. One of the little links is missing. There are two short link rods, about 3" in length, each with a large ball joint at one end and a small one at the other. The upper one of these has vanished! Not just popped off at one end, as you'd expect!
I don't have one of those, but the whole set-up looks identical to the ubiquitous Pug 206, so I'm hopeful the breakers will come up with a good one.
Anybody know how you split the large end of these?
I've always done the small end, any time I've needed to take the linkage apart, having found the large end very resistant to normal methods!
Cheers guys

Both ends have cup shape fixing. Some of them can be real tight.

Usually the long (245 mm) linkage's larger end becomes loose. I had to change the longer one in mine while both shorter (100 mm) links stayed in good shape during all these years.

Yes, same as the Pugs.
I see lots of bodgery holding those together after they've failed. never seen a short one fail, though.
This one didn't just fail. It vanished into thin air!
The client is extremely "white-collar" and therefore above suspicion.
Otherwise, I must admit, I'd be looking at him very strangely indeed!
