2.0 hdi 8v 90 BHP timing belt advice

Post by cc101 »

Hi all been a while, about to change a timing belt on the above engine, the engine has an adjustable cam sprocket (3 bolt type) the BOL says these three bolts need to be loosened and the pulley rotated prior to fitting the belt.

My question is why is this necessary, I can't see the purpose!

Cheers all, Chris.

it to make sure its timed correctly..basically its fine adjustment to make sure the belt can sit on the sprocket correctly

Cheers Taff, I'm guessing if I just use my trusty method of tippexing belt and sprockets and locking cam/crank, it should work?

Cheers.

yea no harm in it...lock ur crank and cam if ur not sure how to do this just ask..
undo ur tensioner and off it comes..be sure thou when refitting to hold it tight up from the crank sprocket..up over fuel pump sprocket(no timing needed) and over the cam sprocket(with the 3 bolts loose)you can sit the belt on perfect..then once on tension up the belt and when ur happy with the tension retighten the the bolts on cam..remove locking pins and turn over engine a good 10 times..then relock the cam crank to check the timing is still correct :)

Cheers, why does the BOL say to rotate cam 1 turn before fitting belt!??

I presume when u say fine tuning u mean moving the pulley a fraction so the tooth drops in the groove on the sprocket easily? (Done a few 1.6 hdi but not an early 2.0 hdi)

Thanks, Chris

yeah thats correct mate :)
once your locked up loosen the bolts and turn it clockwise, locate the belt turning it anticlockwise untill it sits but make sure u havent turned it too far back against the bolts(anticlockwise)if so try again..make sure you hold the belt taught(tight) and should go on ok..u can get like a horse shoe clip which holds the belt to crank sprocket to aid fitting but u could make something sinular out of some sprung metal(u should be ok without this mind but its all about taking ur time)
good luck once u have done it once its easy ;)

also just disconect the battery and remove the starter motor with wires atached..just move it to the side so u can get ur lockingpin in the flywheel..start with a metal coat hanger..once you got it check cam is ok and lock it with something as tight as possible..i went through a few bolts till i found a nice tight fit..also beware the cam has two what can be perceived as timing lugs..have a good look and it should be obvious..

Thanks Taff, sorry to be a pain, does it mean rotate the cam pulley 1 complete turn 360 degrees then anticlockwise a tad to locate teeth, and then make sure the three bolts sit square in there holes. I live by the method measure twice cut once! :)

what itmeans is to turn the cam sprocket itself..once you have put ur lockingpins in and loosen the three bolts the sprocket can turn on the camshaft...so the timming stays the same but u cam turm the sprockt about 2-3 teeth to get it linned up..it also good as it allows any slack from the pump sprocket to cam sprocket to be removed while tentioning
whatever u do make sure its locked correctly before you remove the belt and also dont try and turn it over while its locked

It also makes it easier to get the belt on.

2.0 HDi 8V timing belt guide here: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 11&t=33939" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What car is it on? Later cars (after about 2001) the floating cam sprocket was deleted in favour of a floating crank sprocket. In this case, just pin the crank and cam and then let the sprocket float to get the belt on.
