2.1 TD into a 2.5TD XM....

Unread post by lankytim »

Hi all.

My XM is hitting the road at the end of the month, however i'm aware of the 2.5s bad press regarding engine failure compared to the other engine types.

I think everything will be fine and dandy but it got me thinking. If the 2.5 did explode in a shower of balance shafts and tensioners, would it be straightforward to replace it with a more reliable 2.1 unit?

Well it's safe to say that all the parts needed exist. But whether different driveshafts would be needed I don't know. The clutch is different and could need a different pedal box. The throttle is drive by wire on a 2.5 but not on a 2.1. Then again unless you're swapping to a Bosch 2.1 you'd need the electronics and loom for a Lucas type.

The 2.1 all mechanical is certainly a more reliable engine although if its done around 150k its worth replacing the head gasket before you fit it, much easier out than in. The 2.1 has a cable clutch, it would be nice if you could modify the 2.1 box to use it because the mechanical one is usually heavy, don't know if the 2.5 box will fit the 2.1 engine, or does it have cable change? that would be the easiest way, I don't think the gearing is a lot different.

The gearbox is different to take the hydraulic clutch, HOWEVER Tim, if the gearbox will mate up thats one problem solved.

HOWEVER, the other BIG issue is the Subframe is different, and the top engine mount is also different, you will need to cut away the 2.5 TOP mount thats spot welded onto the off side suspension turret. To me its quite a BIG PITA to do, better finding a 2.1 TD thats already about, though likely to be an Auto.

In hindsight, its not an easy thing to do, and I cant say if the big 2.5 MG gearbox will fit the 2.1 Block.

....It may be easier to stick an HDI 110 in there.... Hydraulic clutch already and i'm sure a few scotch locks would see it running :)

To be fair, any dramatic engine fault would probably scrap the car. As you say just buying a 2.1 to start with would be the most straightforward option.

Hdi same as 2.1 .. you still need go sort the top mount area out.. and swap subframes over..

notice also the 2.5 chassis rail leg on the drivers side is "cut out" to take the outright width of the 2.5 too.

Sadly the Hdi engine is not as smooth at low revs as the 2.1 - I know, I have both.

I do too Peter. . The hdi IS quieter.. However. For early 2.1 completely me chiral 2.1s.. The race is on for the better of economy and I reckon they are equal..

So the 2.5 is pretty unloved then, nobody seems to like it!

2.5 was a brave attempt for citroen. It's a massive engine for a 4 pot. Most engine parts are unique and expensive twin radiators unique.. external water pump over the gear box end of the head twin balancer shafts..then there's the weak oil coolers which are notorious for leaking oil into the water.. All for 20 bhp gain over the 110 2.1 engine . Then there's the amazingly low 40 at best mpg where the 2.1 manuals can achieve 50..

The only better thing is the hydraulic clutch and cable gear linkages
