2003 c5 rain water in boot opening hatch

Post by johnnywhitevan »

Hi all.
When I open the hatchback of my 2003 c5 the rainwater runs around the base of the rear Screen and straight into the boot. I have just bought the car and looking for a fix or upgrade before I start experimenting myself.
I understand this is a common problem so hoping someone has a fix.
Thanks
John

Are the drain channels clean?
I have heard this mentioned previously but I have a 53 C5 that I have owned for almost two years and never happen.

Its a design fault, I just open the hatch half way until most of the water runs off the boot.

They all do that. As Waynedance says, just open it halfway first..

And they haven't managed to improve on the design with the new X7 either! Because of the concave rear window or the boot lid design, when I open the boot fully, the water drips from the rear pointed edges into the boot. The boot lid opens completely vertical, thanks to the concave window, but surface water runs to the boot-lid edges and quite a bit of it misses the water channels . It's a PITA if you have clothes or luggage in the boot.

Is that an estate ?
The hatchback dumps water unless it's on very level ground.

Lots of other makes do it too. Cars are made for wind tunnels and styling........not for opening when wet :rofl2:

Both. It is the hatch I was referring to though.

I must only open it on level ground as I have never had a problem with it.

I can't remember my Mk 1 dripping water from the hatch, but maybe I just never noticed it. Sometimes you notice things, then you are on the lookout for them all the time.

I have looked for it after others have complained of it and opened it while washing the car and played the hose on it.

It is level where I wash the car though.

I remember when a workmate bought a brand new SAAB 900 Turbo just after they were launched and was very disappointed when the spoiler directed rainwater into the boot.

Steve, it must be a difficult thing to overcome, without adding all sorts of deflectors and channels. Maybe it doesn't rain as much where you are. :?:

I wonder if it also happens with Rolls Royce's (don't expect I'll ever find out)

I can assure you that we get more than our fair share of rain here.
I generally fire a load of crap in the boot before and after work and although the ground is almost level but not quite, I never have water getting into the boot.

As for RR and their ilk, I have absolutely no idea. Not likely to either.

I open my C5 hatch quite carefully when wet.. I think Xants did this boot filling too? I could be wrong..

Yep, I knew that John. It was kind of tongue in cheek when I said maybe it doesn't rain where you are.
